Pretty funny when you think about that UConn is about 1/3 closer to 1WTC than Syracuse. (118 miles vs 194 miles)

This might have been asked, but why is the east side of the base/lobby still left open?

It's where the temporary loading dock is. I have no idea why they still need it.

I saw that on a recent picture and was wondering about it too. I thought it was closed already. Maybe they need it for something regarding 3 or 2WTC? Could that be the case?

I found the issue. It is currently an "Interim Loading Dock", but shall be replaced by a permanent one probably in July 2016 when the temporary PATH station is cleared and the Vehicular Security Center is connected. Sorry I couldn't post a link yet but google that with "one world trade center" and you'll see some info and PDF facts about it by Durst, and even related news about how it's blocking the replacement of fuel cells.

Wow, I never was very impressed by the earlier design of the base, but this rendering looks fantastic!

It may be lying somewhere in this thread, but I don't know if I want to search for the answer through over 2000 pages. So please forgive me, if it already has been answered: At which point was the design for this base revised to the one we have now? And if there was a reason, what was it?

It was found that the glass didn't quite hold to explosions; produced large shards.

Thanks for the answer in regards of safety.

Well the material is one thing, but I specifically meant the shape of the base. Then boxy one that we've got is a little boring in my opinion (but that might be because I only know it from pictures). On this earlier version I especially like the flattened corners. Would have been a nice little nod to the old towers I think. Any insight why the shape was changed?

I don't believe there's a reason why they got rid of the chamfered corners.

Either way, I think the base change was the best redesign of the building.

@ iiConTr0v3rSYx
Oh, okay.

On another note... I think it's really cool, that 1WTC is now starting to show up very prominently on one movie poster after another. The Twin Towers have been part of movie posters so many times over the decades, that it's more than overdue to present the new tower more often.

The newest examples are:
- "The Secret Life of Pets" 1WTC is taking more or less center stage in the background and is very clearly visible. Here you can see the poster.
- "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2" Here we have two posters with the tower. The first one is a group shot with the Turtles. They are sitting on the Chrysler Building and in the background there is the ESB and further down 1WTC. The second one, and this is really great, is a character poster for Raphael. He is standing on the left side on another tower and to his right there is very large 1WTC. It is actually so huge in this poster, that I'm not sure what the want to sell to us... the movie with fighting turtles or the tower.

Like I said, I think it's fantastic it shows up so often now. Can't wait to see what comes next.

Well, if PEOPLE WHO HAD BEEN WATCHING THE CONSTRUCTION OF THIS TOWER SINCE ITS BEGINNING STAGES have noticed anything, when the tower was being constructed, the base had the chamfered corners. And then the glass had to be changed for safety (and cost), and for some reason the new glass couldn't fit the chamfered corners (I guess it was too thick or slanted glass pieces couldn't have opening find like the current ones do) so they literally tatted on the new glass onto a base that was meant to have chamfered corners. This might not be entirely accurate because I was not one of the people who had been watching the construction of the base, but it is the information I was told.
