Something's going on up top. They've removed the platform that was below the beacon, and have added "cladding". Before/now:

One things for sure, the white looks good.

Also, RIP to all those killed on 9/11.

I kinda hope that more radio equipment goes on and along that spire to somewhat give it that bulk that it missed out on when they redesigned it.

Rest in peace to the people we lost on 911

15th anniversary surprise: they're prepping the spire to add the radome. One could dream anyway.

They've begun 'cladding' the section below this one aswell.

Hmm, even if they just do that cladding for the entire spire, it will make it appear brighter at night. I'm ok with that.

Window on WTC1

What says on the mistake WTC1 with those different disappoint as seen especially in sunny weather? Who is responsible? That the twins would have been unthinkable a year that was written in 1970, but now in 2016 ??? Very bad ... big mistake ...

I wonder if they'll remove the rest of the platforms, too, maybe the spire will appear more elegant with this intervention.

Not sure why, but I am not a huge fan of the platforms and the overall industrial look of the spire, I like how glassy and smooth the building looks, I always thought that the spire should look more elegant.
