There is atleast some activity going on today, they poured a part of the memorial this morning and flattened the sand on top of the arches.

But at the moment you can barely see anything on the Earthcam.

There is some serious steel work on the south pool at the moment, despite of the bad weather conditions.

And I think the southwest part of the bathtub over the path trains has grown too. At least you can see new steel beams laying around in that area. So they will be installed very soon.

With today's work, we can really see the full dimensions of the footprint pool:

Yeah, this is really exciting. BTW, a lot of us have been wondering about that dirt over Fulton Street. I'm beginning to think more and more that it's just temporary dirt placed there for two reasons: to bring the elevation up to street level to allow the cranes to drive freely onto it from West Street, and to prevent the cranes (especially the huge crawler going up this winter) from tearing up the already placed concrete with their tire treads, in the same way that dirt was placed over the bedrock and basement levels in the memorial section and was later removed. You can see some kind of steam-roller thing compressing the dirt, which wouldn't make one iota of sense if it were going to be permanent and eventually used for the trees (since tree roots wouldn't be able to grow in that kinda compressed dirt). Just a thought. Anyone else got any ideas?

that dirt will not be used for trees but you got an idea right pretty much: to prevent damage and to level the road.. I'm not sure if a crawler will be going on that road although

I think they are just building the street, layer by layer... The underground of a street is very complex...

I really do not expect any of the crawlers to ever drive on that road. Thats probably too much weight for the arches! The tracks where the crawlers are currently operating from consist of a hell of a lot of steel beams, covered with wood. Thats a complete different thing.

They are planning on rolling deliveries down Fulton Street from Vescey and out to West Street during the next phase of construction.

The dirt is part of the underlayment of the street. They will likely embed drainage and utility pipes in the dirt before installing temporary asphalt. I understand there will also be a rainwater collection system incorporated.

From the list of 4th quarter milestones in the recently released 3Q 2009 report:
"Complete Fulton Street Access Roadway

This work consists of retaining walls, concrete wall and slab infill, permanent backfill, and a temporary paving course for the western portion of Fulton Street. Once complete, this roadway will provide access for Station Roof construction and Tower One steel staging."

So all of the dirt they've been trucking in is the backfill that the road will be built on top of. They will do a temporary paving job for the construction traffic soon. Eventually, that will be broken up and removed, but the dirt will continue to be used as backfill when the permanent Fulton Street is paved on top of it.
