[QUOTE=ElCrioyo;47252035]Popularity surge in this thread now. Just as i expected. Soon to become the most popular thread in SSC, the Burj Dubai is loosing ground.

That is because the Burj Dubai is nearly completed. WTC still has a long way to grow.

Wheww. Glad it wasn't a long outage. The decking for the fifth floor is coming along nicely. Hopefully more core steel will arrive soon.

Jump in height? The tower cranes don't jump everytime new core steel is put in. They usually jump two floors, so they should jump to the sixth floor(the floor after this) when they're preparing for the 20th floor.

Wow, the 20th floor. That was fast.

Their will be a "jump in height" overall with the new core steel. I think we'll see the tower cranes jump when the core steel reaches the 20th floor, not the 6th.

Dubai is a global city. And it is probable that in the next decades it will become one of the most important cities in the world. Right up to new york, london and paris. To say otherwise is to not understand the reality of the situation.

I don’t expect nearly as many supertall skyscrapers from them in the future, I don’t expect nearly as many to be announced in the next decade, especially with their credit market going down the tubes. They’re getting more and more expensive and risky to build.
Well, sure there will be a slowdown for some years. But in the next 20 years you will see much more supertalls build than in the last 20 years.

Actually that's the south side of the tower(N, S, E, W axis, and north points toward the verizon building), and that's the tower elevator. I'm glad to see it in operation.

They are actually going to build extremely thick (10 ft?) concrete "blast walls" enclosing the base of the building to protect it from truck bombs etc.
The only glass will be at the entrances, and there will be secondary blast wall behind those.
Actually, the blast walls well be between 2' 6" and 3' thick.

The next big thing for Tower One is the 20th floor corner nodes.

image hosted on flickr

They transition from the 2 slanted corner columns down to one column out to 3 columns. They are made of solid steel and have a total hight of 90 feet and weigh about 53 tons. There well be one at each corner of course and I expect to see them in the first quarter of 2010.

As for the Memorial, the chiller plant contract has been awarded and we should see it start to go in early next year. That big opening west of the South pool is where they are going to lower all the machinery (heat exchangers, pumps, etc.)

Wow, very interesting, I thought, that this piece would be significantly smaller. Are the crawlers tall enough to lift it to the 20th floor?
