Subway was actually picked because they were the only contract bidder that didn't demand a guaranteed profit clause. It could have been a McDonald or a Burger King, but they wanted a contract that would garuntee a profit, the PA didn't like that.

No, I heard they picked it because it didn't need any large electrical connections. I haven't heard a thing about the bidding process, I didn't even know anyone else bid.

Here an AP article that gives a bit of background on the selection of Subway:

Sandwich shop opens at tower rising at ground zero

Quote:
The fast-food chain was subcontracted by DCM Erectors, which fabricates and installs all of the tower's structural steel. Among nine bidders, Subway was the only one that did not demand a guarantee of profit, said Bill Grutta, DCM's vice president of operations.

"They came back with an offer to do this at cost, and if there's a loss, we'll subsidize it," Grutta said, adding, "We're not looking to make money on the food, just to accommodate the ironworkers."

Interesting...I think I was reading about the lack of electronics in Subways somewhere else. Yes, I think it was an NBC news article. They were talking about how Subway has been the top entrepreneur chain for 9 of the last 10 years, because it's the cheapest to run and makes the most money. Sorry about that.

the podium almost finish. The thing that's amazes me is, that this is only the base. I wonder if there going to open as the build it. Like trump tower in Chicago they may not

that would be cool, but I would think probably not since it's all office space and the security concerns. Trump had the hotel in the lower floors that opened early.

So all that has been built so far is going to have the same thing that 7 WTC has, the metalic thing instead of glass? (srry i don't know the proper/adequate words).

Very nice to see progress now.
A long wait, (no insult or complaining intended), but it's worth it.
Now the Burj Dubai (or whatever they call it now) is complete,
the 1WTC tower is the one to watch!
As this tower rises, so will the American pride.
Too bad they beat us in the World Junior Hockey Championships,
but the way they played, they deserved it.

The border between the basement and the upperpart of the tower can you see on the different glasspanels they use.
