I have walked past the construction site many times over the past three months, and the base is much smaller than I would have ever imagined. This is going to be a very slim tower, probably less than half of the footprint of one of the previous towers.

No, the dimensions of the base are very similar to the old towers. OWTC 200 ft, while original WTC was 208 ft.

Handbanana is right, the footprint of the tower is more or less exactly the same size as the original Twin Towers. This footprint of the original Twin Towers was exactly 207'8", from column center to column center (and the windows were even with the center of the columns, so it makes sense to define the footprint this way. The footprint of the new 1WTC from column center to column center is 200'. However, the windows for the building are not located between the columns. The columns will be covered with some type of cladding and then there will be about a foot of open space and then there will be the actual edge of the building (the windows). It's a lot like how 7WTC is. Based on what ZenSteelDude has said, there will be 2 and a half feet between the column center and the glass window, so the building has a total footprint of 205'. Compared to 207'8".

This is an accurate scaled illustration I made showing the footprint of the Freedom Tower (in red) compared to one of the Twin Towers (in grey):

lol if the base is "smaller than you ever could have imagined" this leads me to believe you've never even once set eyes on it, at least not recently

It looks less bulky because of the angled beams (and openness) of the base. He should sing a different tune when the cladding goes up.

RKOwens44 is spot on in his assessment. Tower One is only a few feet smaller than the Twins and well be the same hight.

From recent pics I can say that I well be shocked if the steel erection does not continue this coming week. The cranes have jumped as have the work platforms and the 26th floor is decked out.

I wonder when we'll see that mysterious 3rd crane.

That all depends on the concrete contractor and progress at street level.

Hmmm, I did see a truck with what seemed to be crane parts right by the WTC site yesterday afternoon (on the corner of Liberty and Trinity I believe). Im not sure if that's the crane you are referring to or if this is a new one to be used on one of the other 3 wtc buildings?

That makes sense.....I have a warped sense of humor at times.....wasn't serious! Cooling towers......do you have much trouble with Legionnaires Disease over there? I know with very tall buildings they are well above street level but occasionally this is a problem here...I would love to come back to New York and see WTC 1 rising so high now.....must make a plan to get there at least on completion. I have either seen this site as the original WTC or a hole in the ground so it's fantastic to see this progress.
