The concrete blast wall is to protect against truck bombs. Because of criticism that the lobby would look like a depressing "concrete bunker", they put those openings in the concrete to allow more sunlight to enter the lobby.

I hope they hang an American flag on the side of the building for the Fourth of July this Sunday, like they did for a few weeks back around December or so. It is, afterall, the July 4, 1776 tower.

On a side note, I've been thinking this for a while but it would be awesome if they added the final section to the top of the spire on either July 4, 2012 or July 4, 2013.

I'm sure it wouldn't be hard for them to hang a flag from the building.

The guy at rebuildgroundzero.com just uploaded 93 pics from all around the site on his website in the photos section, under June 2010. They look to be about a week or so old, but still very cool shots from literally every conceivable angle around the site.

Why would having the topping-off ceremony for the spire being on a July 4th be overdoing it? Either the topping-off of the roof or the topping-off of the spire should occur on some meaningful date, either a September 11 or a July 4th. The topping-off at the roof will probably occur around the beginning of 2012 and I'm sure they're not going to postpone the installation of the final beam for half a year.

The building will be 1776 feet tall as we all know, because of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th 1776, and was/is called the "Freedom Tower". If they wanted to, they could plan the construction of the spire so that they can have the final section of it, which will bring the building to a height of 1776 feet, in place on a July 4th. The name Freedom Tower may have been tacky and cheesy but topping out the building at 1776 feet on a July 4th would be symbolic and memorable.

It has been said different times before: 1wtc it's almost as wide as the original twins so it's not as thin as it looks

I love the arc created by the corner design. It normally does not show up very well in pictures (spectacular in person), but the picture above by RKOwens shows it perfectly! Thanks

Too thin? Looks wider at the base than the twins on the HD cam.

I disagree. The height of 1776 feet already crosses the border from sentiment to kitsch. After all, when you look at it from a sober perspective, it is in the end "just an office building", which by itself certainly has no connection to liberty or patriotism whatsoever (personally I find office work closer to slavery than working in an Indonesian sweatshop, but that's just my opinion, I really, really hate office work). I like the idea of prominently displaying the star-spangled banner on Independence Day and of course far more importantly on Sept. 11th, this to me is a far more important symbol of "this is America, we will rebuild, you can't break us" than trying to squeeze kitschy symbolism into the architecture of an office building.

Dunno if any of that makes sense, I just woke up five minutes ago and haven't had my coffee yet, so I am not at my most eloquent...

That's something we won't have to worry about for a long time, most likely.
