we're not going metric, they tried when I was 6 and let's say it didn't bold well.

Sidenote I just came back to NYC Monday. And I was think on my way through Jersey. I can't wait to see tower one from here. You can see ESB, BOA and for some reason The Times Towers clear from Newark.

It seems that the memorial for the old twin towers is coming along really quickly. The empty holes were the towers stood ( a very very nice memorial in my opinion ) seem to be almost finished.

I am English and when I was young we had not only feet and inches but a currency based on twelve pennies to a shilling and twenty shillings to a pound.

However, from my schooldays I have used the metric system and for the engineering work that I do, I would never consider using anything else (although a knowledge of feet and inches is still necessary when working on old structures and interpreting old drawings.

But when it comes to measurement of the human body, the old imperial system is much better to the extent that even very young people will still express their height in terms of feet and inches. Metres are too big, millimetres far too small. Centimetres are a bit better but ruled out of the SI (Systeme Internationale) system.

The French architect Le Corbusier praised the British imperial system for its proportionality and proposed adopting a similar system internationally.

As for the use of twelve rather than ten. Ten is obvious because we have ten fingers. However, the people who decided that there should be twelve inches to a foot or twelve pennies to a shilling also had ten fingers - so why choose such an odd multiple - were they stupid or was it just cussedness?

As I understand it, there was a very good mathematical reason. Apart from itself and one, ten can only be divided into two lots of five or five lots of two. However, twelve can be divided into six lots of two, four lots of three, three lots of four or two lots of six. That made the use of twelve much more convenient.

I suppose we should have gone the whole hog and adopted a duodecimal system with 10 representing twelve and new numerals to represent ten and eleven and, since we didn't, the use of a measurement and currency system based on the decimal system has been more practical.

I'm not advocating going back to imperial measurement but if the USA goes on using the system indefinitely, I can't see it causing too many problems - after all they managed to land a man on the moon using feet and inches.

Sorry for sidetracking this thread and I promise not to do it again but I think that this is an interesting subject.

Cm are out of the SI as much as feet and inches,

Ten is obvious because we have only 10 numerals, and it would be too difficult to add a couple.

And they lost a 300million dollar spacecraft for a misunderstanding between metrical and imperial units

That won't change the meaning, but firstly I doubt there will be a conversion anytime soon....doubt I'll ever see it.

this building wont be any taller or shorter than any of the other current supertalls in the world if the system were to change from imperial to metric. It will still be shorter than the BK and taller the the Sears Tower. The height stays the same!!

lol what a silly perspective.

I got off this metric/ Imperial thing..all I was saying it is a symbolic measurement....in this case height in feet...sure it will stay the same whether the system changes but the measurement in Metres wont have that symbolic meaning.....we put up a 150ft flag pole for our 150th Anniversary but now it's just a tall flag pole because we're metric now....meanwhile back to WTC 1.

...it will still be 1,776 feet tall, metric or not. A foot will still be a foot.
