I agree. I think the new WTC is more beautiful than the old Twins.

Others have expressed the wish that the new tower be 2001 feet instead of 1776 feet, and that is something I would have loved - but it's not going to happen.

1776 is a date that symbolizes birth, 2001 is a year that symbolizes death. I think they made the right choice.

Being from Philadelphia I want to assure you I do understand the symbolism of "1776" ...

I just like taller buildings, that's all. Besides, 2001 can symbolize resolve, rebirth, determination, resurrection ... "I rise in flames, cried the Phoenix".

...plus it's been nearly 40 years since the original was built. If they had rebuilt it exactly as it was, it would look like '60's architecture. After seeing pics of that cladding, I'm convinced that the finished product is going to be stunning!

I notice two shrouded ( so far ) tri columns from the original towers standing beside WTC 1 near one of the memorial footprints. The architecture of the memorial footprints is clean and simple yet would have liked to see these columns rising from their original location to the inch......I also felt that way about the stairway still standing during my last visit in 2007....guess anything of the original relocated on the site will still hold lot's of meaning. The quality of the stainless steel facade detail looks very impressive.

The people who keep suggesting the tower should have been 2001 ft. tall are seriously on drugs.

yes, it is a similar building in height (roof/ spire / form), but it looks more modern and has its own style

One World Trade Center Prepares to Shine
Updated October 8, 2010 7:34am

By Julie Shapiro
DNAinfo Reporter/Producer

LOWER MANHATTAN — The shining exterior of One World Trade Center will soon be visible for miles around.

The gleaming stainless-steel and glass panels will begin to rise next month to cover the skyscraper, formerly known as the Freedom Tower, the Port Authority said.

The first batch of facade materials, including pieces for the 20th through 24th floors, is already on its way to lower Manhattan. The glass is coming from the manufacturer Viracon of Owatonna, Minn., and the steel pieces are traveling from the main curtain wall contractor, Benson Industries of Portland, Ore., the Port Authority said.

David M. Childs' design for the 1,776-foot tower — which will be the tallest in the city when completed — features eight tall triangles of glass and steel, which grow alternately narrower and wider as they approach the building's peak. Halfway up the tower, the facets of the facade will form a perfect octogon.

"Its overall effect is that of a crystalline form that captures an ever‐evolving display of refracted light," said Childs' firm, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, in a statement.

"As the sun moves through the sky or we move around the tower, the surfaces appear like a kaleidoscope, and will change throughout the day as light and weather conditions change."

The first 20 stories of the tower, comprising the lobby and mechanical space, will have a more porous, sparkling facade, made of prismatic glass and an aluminum screen.

Steel for tower has reached the 42nd floor and is rising at a rate of one story per week.

The $3.2 billion building is scheduled to open in 2013.

this tower violates copyrights, it's a copy, but it will still shine in the sun, and people will remember what happened, the day the 1776 killed the 90's.
