I get the impression this board is populated by lots of younger people who never actually saw the twin towers. Each one of those was way more imposing than this thing is. And taken together....

It's great to finally have lots of real progress at the site. And indeed the WTC site taken as a whole has an amazing amount of construction taking place. But don't let your excitement over that cloud your judgement and lead you to think this building is the best thing to ever happen to NY. It isn't. The buildings built 40 years ago at this site were certainly much more impressive and definitely were at the forefront of what skyscrapers could be in that era. This building is already smallish compared to other buildings around the globe and only partially fills the gaping hole left by its predisescers.

So while we celebrate the construction I think we should keep it in perspective. New York could, and should, do much better than this building.
I do agree with you 600West218. I don't let any of my excitement cloud my judgement in terms of this Tower. I loved the Twin Towers and wish to God they still existed this way none of this construction would be happening now. However, I am relieved the Freedom Tower is finally making its way up in the sky and overtaking Manhattan just like the Twin Towers did once before. The one thing I loved about the Twin Towers was its sheer size. It was amazing to walk around Downtown and have all the regular Skyscrapers and then you look at the World Trade Center and there they were two supertalls that looked as if they reached towards the heavens. The Twins were pretty much the Kings of Manhattan and Freedom Tower will soon take that back from the Empire State Building. As much as I love the Empire State Building it's just good to have something much bigger and that's what the Twin Towers did and so will the Freedom Tower.

I totally agree. Freedom Tower is an excellent super tall building, but nothing will overcome the twin towers. Freedom Tower may be a more beautiful design than the original towers, but nowhere near the "power" that the twin towers had in the city. And yes, I believe that New York can do much better than building the Freedom Tower, giving regard to the projects done around the world. New York can and should have a larger project!

Do most people act like only FT is replacing the old WTC?

Hi all.

I think this project (and the others) will fit nicely on the WTC site. That being said, I too think the twins were great structures that should not be forgotten. So much so that one of the 4 skyscraper books I just ordered from Amazon is "Men of Steel ..." I was a youngster when the twins were completed, yet I remember ... They were a big part of why I love scrapers.
I finally dloaded the FEMA and NIST reports on 9/11 and am reading them as time permits.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not part of the "bring back the twins" movement, I just think they should be remembered.

As I stated above it is awesome to see this project climbing for the sky. Once fully completed, the WTC site will look fantastic.

Ray.

I mean the Twin towers weren't really huge compared to the Burj Dubai etc. but there are still only a few out there that are really any bigger.

However I do agree that NY could do better, the tapering of this building takes away from it I think since it won't be as huge and imposing, yet it will still have sides that don't taper all the way up which is cool. Tower's 2 and 3 should be huge and powerful looking buildings like the old WTC and 4 is still a huge skyscraper.

It's not many places on earth that there are 4 1000+ foot building right next to each other, so it should turn out better than we think. I mean the orginial plans were just so, SO much worse that we should be damn glad that at least these buildings are getting built.

i think it will be the exact opposite. it will be numerous tall towers that taper off and blend into the skyline. the twin towers towered about the rest of the skyline and stuck out like sore thumbs (in the best way possible). sorry to be the millionth person to say it, but nothing could ever replace those modernist monoliths.

That's not so difficult, you are talking about Tilburg! The only city with a little potention on skyscrapers is Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

I'm a structural engineer and I think it's rather interesting, even though I understand all the principles involved and I know the capacity of the crane, it's cool !

In that second pic by GB posted by DinoVabic you can see the mounting brackets for the base cladingbeing welded to the girts.
