Encasing in concrete prevents the steel from buckling and, therefore, increases the amount of load that it can carry, even if the concrete itself takes none of the direct load of the structure.

There are different techniques for fire-proofing. Encasing in concrete is one technique but it does add weight to the building and can be expensive to apply. Sprayed on mineral fibre is cheap and effective but cannot be used in exposed work because of its appearance. Intumescent paint is preferred by architects as it does not affect the appearance of the column and adds little or on weight to the building. In the event of fire, the paint bubbles up to form an insulating layer which delays the heat of the fire from getting into the structural column - which is the whole point of fireproofing.
Thanks for correcting me and being more precise (was unaware of how the concrete encasing helped the beam ). Appreciate it!

What about if they simply apply the concrete to the beam on the ground then hoist it into place already encased?

The pattern of the water jets is quite obviously intended to be a visual reference to the twins.

Also, the USA is basically the only country in the world that doesn't use metric. It's ridiculous.

The really crazy thing is that if a US politician proposed using metric, s/he would be based for "caving in to foreign interests."
