They were saying it was going to be complete by 2010 even in 2006. Oh well. It's U/C now and going smoothly. That's all that matters now.

The more that gets done, the more I like it. The effect on the skyline will be dramatic.

I don't know....I really want to like the glass, but I can't. At least not right now. It just looks too wavy from too many angles. I've just looked through 10 pages of pictures of the Shard and didn't see a single wavy shot. I'm hoping it's just the protective film, as was suggested on other forums, but has that been confirmed by anyone official?

Again, here is a mockup of the cladding without protective foil.

You see any waves?

Very cool, Otie. However I think the width of the building is more like 205'x205'. 200'x200' is column center to column center, and as you can see in almost any pic of the cladding installation, there's a good 2-3 feet between the column center and the glass window, on each side.

There is no protective film on the glass that is installed on the tower. What you see is what you get.

That mock-up above is demonstrating reflections of objects that are many yards away but the big point here is THE PHOTOGRAPHER WAS CLOSE TO THE GLASS.

The farther the observer is away from the reflective surface, the greater the distortions will appear.

For almost all of the WTC pictures, the photographers are a good distance away and using telephoto lenses. This magnifies the distortion. It's the same with a regular household mirror. Stand right up to it and the reflections look perfect. The farther you go away from it, the wavier the reflection gets.

Thats funny you looked through 10 pages of the shard thread and didnt see any waves because a few pages back someone posted a pic of the shard in this thread with waves in the glass from a certain angle.

That was me, and yup, just as wavy (all glass panels at certain angles/distances will have distortions in their reflections, I don't see what is so hard to get). But I can post in another time since it doesn't look like some people get it...

Yes ten pages. Can I see that pic? People are getting upset and defensive for some reason, and kind of missing the point: you have to go out of your way to find a bad shot of the Shard while, I feel, it's the exact opposite with 1WTC. I'm a New Yorker and I love architecture, and there's nothing that I want more than for the WTC buildings to look great. They are in my city!!!!

I agree with traynor, reflections depend on perspetive. But it still doesn't change the fact that from a distance it will always look wavy. Or am I missing something??

Yes, it's true. Some people are not 'getting it'. The quality of the glass on 1WTC is not great. A lot of us expected it to be top notch, and it isn't.

By the way, the ONE picture of what is supposed to be a great example of wavy Shard glass, does not look so bad. Just about every picture (from the same distances) of 1WTC that shows the reflection of another building is so bad it's amazing that there are people defending it! Why not post side by side examples if you are so sure of your point?

First look at the reflection of the building on the left and right of this picture. I promise the reflections show buildings!

Now look at the reflection of the cranes and steel structure on the left of The Shard. I can tell every detail, with no telephoto lens.
