...cladding might catch up to the finished fireproofing, at this rate!

It will look great but eveybody is overexited about the cladding i think. The patern is quite cool (with the pointy sides getting wider while going up) but the glass itselfs is nothing really special. Look at this picture for example and compare it with the building behind it, same old song i think. Its 'just another glass building'. Or is there something mysteriously unique i did not know about?

Gorgeous? Amazing? Isn't it just another glass cladding? (not that I'm against it, but it surely isn't anything special)

Yes there is. The former buildings here were destroyed in the biggest terrorist plot ever which, as you probably know, changed the whole world in many ways since then. The whole site is more than just 4 glass buildings going up. For many people this is more than a building, it's a symbol. And besided that, the whole complex has great attention to details which are, architecturally, very interesting.

You know you could expect an answer like this right ?

Even if it was just another glass building, it would be a very BIG one. The biggest one in America even. It's changing the skyline of New York.

So, there are many reasons why this is more than 'just another glass building.'

What about window shades? Anyone know if they are part of the window frame, or something added later?

Exactly. It's exactly why the cladding is amazing. 1WTC & 7WTC don't look like twins but sisters at least!
Like it.

The cladding also includes that wonderful stainless steel edge! When complete, it will be very different from the surrounding structures.

I was wondering about that. If the glass is all that clear, with no tinting or reflecting layer, it would be unlivable in there when the summer sun hits.
But, shades would make the building look horrible.

which is exactly why the site deserved better architecture--"symbolic" as you put it. instead we're getting two "glass" towers and two "stumps" for a decade (that is if we're lucky and it actually gets built)

Great pictures of what will be a really great building on the New York skyline.

Question, what exactly is the purpose of the crane that appears to be attached to vertical tracks on the NW corner of the building? (An answer more elaborate than 'to lift things' would be great).
