^The south footbridge will stay.

Yes, it's opperating and will be there for a long time. In my opinion, what it's more amazing than the bridge, is the surviving of a tree just beneath those towers after 9/11, last month it was re-planted in the memorial park. But, whatever, off-topic.

That's exactly what it was. It was half David Childs of SOM and half Daniel Libeskind. Not sure how many of you people were on these boards in 2004, but everyone pretty much hated the thing then too.

the Eiffel Tower also hated it in your day to be monstrous. Today is a world icon. At least the old freedom tower design was original and rarely seen, however you are doing today can be seen in any city in the world.

That is good observation, and conservatism won out over a bolder more unique design.

However, I think you are wrong if you can see this building in "any city in the world" ... the base, the tapering octagonal shape and the crown will be subtly different than any other skyscraper that I know of.

Simple economics won out over art in this case, I think. I would have been happy with either design, but having the top 1/4 to 1/3 of the building an empty cage is a damned waste in Manhattan. And what would have happened to the design when the NYPD wanted their bombproof bunker on the bottom?

195 meters, almost the 200 hundred. Only 8 floors more and it will surpass 7 World Trade Center.

This is a beautiful design - one of the best in N. America- and people should stop complaining. The shorter one especially looks amazing.

STR, I used your image and I edited 1WTC to see what it could look like with different variations for the spire, heres what I got.

This one looks extremely modern and like an obelisk, also almost has a comcast center feel to it

This one is more reminiscent of the old wtc roof

Uh I love the NewYork World Financial Center... on every picture of the new skyline with 1WTC, it's still the highlight IMO!

A lot has happened here. I quite agree with meh_cd the empty-cage top is needless in NYC, to say the least.

I like the new buildings but I still wish they were building two twins.

i'm gad to see progress going on there daily. i love passing by the site when i drive through west side highway and seeing the construction progress sends a nice feeling through me. anybody have any idea roughly what the proportion of occupants is going to be? correct me if i'm wrong but i think the port authority is taking a sizable chunk?
