[Split] - Poljud Stadium

This thread is about the 'najlipši stadion na svitu' (the 'most beautiful stadium in the world'). It is Poljud Stadium in Split, the home of the famed football club HNK Hajduk Split.

It was constructed in 1979 for the Mediterranean Games. Initially the west & east stands were seated but the rest of the stadium was terraced for standing. Poljud was designed to fit 50,000 speactators in comfort with a maximimum capacity of 55,000. However, its largest ever recorded crowd was 64,000 for a football league match between Hajduk Split and their fiercest rival Dinamo Zagreb in the 1980s.

The terraced areas were eventually converted to seating so as to comply with FIFA & UEFA regulations so its all seated capacity is now 35,000. Shortly, Poljud Stadium will undergo a major redevelopment worth over 70 million euros.

Poljud stadium is at its most atmospheric whenever Hajduk plays an important match. The uncovered north stand area is where Hajduk's most vociferous supporters reside, they are known as 'Torcida' and are the oldest organised football supporters group in Europe having been founded in 1950. The stadium will be redeveloped over the next few years for the Athletics World Cup in 2010 and hopefully for the Euro football championships in 2012. It is planned to expand capacity anywhere from 44,000 to 50,000. It will require major changes to the stadium including a new roof which will also cover the north stand. Here are some preliminary renderings of the the proposed redevelopment:







The proposed new roof will give Poljud an even more enclosed ambience, as the locals would say 'Ej brale, bit će ludnica !'

Bilo bi bolje da ga samo urede, da ne rade taj neki krov, ali na zalost moraju jer mora ispuniti kriterije da sva mjesta budu natkrivena.

Al zato ce biti akustican do bola, kad se nakoti 50.000 ljudi u tu skoljku.. I onda kad Dinamo razvali Hajduk i nastane grobna tisina... neprocjenjivo

čak i moj antinogometni um mora priznati da je stadion predivan

Bio sam 5-6 puta na Poljudu uživo na tekmama repke i Dinama, a također i po tekmama Bundeslige, ali mogu reći da je atmosfera za gostujuću momčad na Poljudu, kada je pun, najjebenija bez konkurencije u Europi!

I've watched a soccer match at Poljud years ago and I must say I was very impressed with the Stadium's design. Definatley world class from day.

The only down-side are the violent spectators and often hooligans..

There is actually a lot that needs to be done on the stadium, it all looks great from a distance because it was designed so well, but up close it is not in great shape, also the the facilities & amenities are that of a 1970s stadium, and not a modern 21st century stadium for major events. You need proper hospitality, catering areas etc ....

NEgo sto se tice Poljuda jedna stvar me zivcira, a to je ona bura kad zapuse pa pomaze jednoj ekipi, a onda na poluvremenu okrene pa opet pomaze toj istoj ekipi Mozda bi bilo bolje da je okrenut u smjeru zapada (recimo u Rijeci su istok i zapad iza golova..

Novi krov ce taj efekt znatno smanjiti.

Oh no! I like that kind of atmosphere on football stadiums. As long as its lacking in violence. European football without it just wouldnt be the same. GO TORCIDA
