It's an effect called "tilt and shift" - it comes from an old type of camera used for (primarily) architectural photography, where the plane of the film could be moved compared to that of the lens (basically), to remove vertical distortion when photographing buildings. When deployed in a camera looking down on something, it has the effect of rendering everything like a miniature model, because of the very narrow depth of field. Sort of fools the mind into seeing it that way, anyway.

It's easily reproducible in software now, and the three images I posted above have made use of this effect. Worth having a play with, if you're into photography.
