I didn't think we had a thread for Tarpon Springs so I made one.

Some Common Square (forgot name)

Density down Athens Ave.

Spounge Dock (forgot name of road)

Old Building

Greek Othodox Church

Dowtown, out of the back window of car, hence the darkness

Wow I pictured T.S. to be a hole in the wall town. I thought that if I drove through it and I blinked I would miss it.

Tarpon Springs is very self-sustaining it has its own schools, beaches, museums, downtown, aquariums, traditions and tourism. A few things it could use are a nice sized hotel, bowling alley, and movie theatre.

Every couple months I enjoy a nice drive out to Tarpon Springs. Fresh seafood! Great eating places! Nice afternoon!

Actually, Tarpon Springs has pretty much all of that. There is a bowling alley near the the Staples store on the corner of US 19 and Tarpon Ave. There is a movie just south of the city on US 19. And across from Lake Tarpon Park is a hotel that was built just a year ago.

Tarpon Springs has only one tower and that is I believe 11 floors tall.

I actually lived just across from it when I first move here with the family.

If they wanted to, they have more room to build another tower, but for what would be a good question. Be cool if they buil a nice 7 story apartment structure with reasonable price and then they can tore down some of them ugly apartment complexes around the area.

They had a farmers market type thing going on where they shut the main street and made it pedestrian only. I always visit when i'm in the area.

Nice pics, CrazyCanuck.

b.t.w. Toronto has one of the nicest skylines and it's rated as one of the friendliest cities on the globe. Lucky you!

It's pretty much one road about 5 or 6 blocks long. Most of the action is near the Spounge Docks. Downtown is pretty much just a few banks and restaraunts.

Nice pics CrazyCanuck.

Honestly there is no reason to go to Downtown Tarpon Springs, but you can go to the Sponge Docks and Fred Hoaward Park/Beach with some Greek food at Mama's for dinner and spend a full day easily.

Thanks guys. I love visiting Tarpon Springs, it's always one of the highlights of my trips when I come to Clearwater. We have our own greek district in Toronto, every year they hold a food festival called Taste of the Danforth. 1 million people visit in just 3 days. Here is a pic.

Alright i went dow to Tarpon Springs for the epiphany(sp?) and snapped a few pictures while I was down there.

Tarpon Sprngs themed Christmas tree

Spounging Boat

Tribute Statue for Spounge Divers

Shops near the Spounge Docks

And might as well put in this crappy one. The building in the foreground is the (very nice) Courthouse, with the main Greek Orthodox Church in the background.

When i was in Tarpon Springs i noticed several medium to high density Townhome projects. There was even one right on the water at the Eastern end of the Spounge Docks, with a pretty good view. However, there is a good bit of surface parking lots and empty lots just a block away from the action. Tarpon Springs has been suffering because their stuff isn't selling like it used too. I think they should try to attract more guest by building a small hotel or something, obvioulsly keeping the Greek theme and apropiate scale.

The thing is, what is the point of getting a hotel in Tarpon? There is Sponge Docks and Howard Park and also Tarpon Lake, but that is basically it. I'm not bashing Tarpon, but come on. There is no exact point on getting a hotel there. If there was to be a hotel built here, then there will have to be a transportation service to the beaches and all through Pinellas. And with the plans of something like that happening, then maybe hotels will be needed, but not now. I have driven buy the only hotel in Tarpon, there isn't much people staying there, because there is nothing to do. If Tarpon wanted to do something, build a "Mini-Channelside". There is a perfect location in the middle of Tarpon. Build a movie theatre and a couple restaurants, I prefer a Greek restaurant, since most Greeks live there and a couple more things. Not much, but it is a start.
