Why this tower has an Arabic name? Are the main investors Arabs? Together with the building in its base, it actually looks somewhat similar to a contemporary mosque's minaret (because it has an Islamic geometry in its plan).

Lakhta is the Russian name of the area.

It's a lot more Arabic, as a name. It even sounds very much Arabic. It's one of the most Arabic-sounding words I've heard (and I've heard tens of thousands of them). But thanks for the answer!

Well, it depends. For me when I hear "Lakhta" I think "something Finnish". Maybe it's because I don't know Arabian at all, but know many Finnish names. And Lakhta has Finnish origin indeed. Finnish "lahti" means "a bay".

You are totally correct. Finnish people used to live in this place (Lakhta) long ago and the name stems from the Finnish word Lahti. The tower is obviously named after the place where it is build

kapistalism is evil , only USSR kommunism is great.

USSR joke aside.

1 : 100 years ago skyscrapers were an american invention, with most improvement coming from USA, the only peoples who could build skyscrapers this tall were american.
2 : why you build a skyscraper?
A : to show off
B : because you have a very limited place in a small area...russia isn't the most overcrowed country in the world (might just be a problem for cities like moscow or st petersburg....and still acrowed city paris haven't any supertall )

In the 1900s, Singer wanted to build a skyscraper in St. Petersburg, but strict regulations (it is prohibited to build in the center of St. Petersburg higher than the Winter Palace) did not allow him to do it. Then he built this beautiful building.

As can be seen St. Petersburg was only in one step away from the skyscraper 100 years ago. But city defenders...

It's a very common thing worldwide the limit building higher than "other building on city"
(on western europe it's very typical to have that limitation with churches)

The only truly secure system is one that is powered off, cast in a block of concrete and sealed in a lead-lined room with armed guards - and even then I have my doubts. Gene Spafford.
I am Basque, not Russian, the "Siberia" thing is a joke.

If our new height limit in St. Pete would be "no taller than Lakhta Center" I'd be very happy

Regarding the MSU image above: that is in fact the only valid thing USSR had produced before it perished. We can confidently say USSR has done 2 big things: "7 sisters" and a gigaton of crap.
