there is a long-term plan for large financial district on the other side of the city. but this one is just a single tower with a complex of mid-rises (large podium).

The tents are for archeology work. The equipment is for testing the barrettes.

The skyscraper is supposed to house some parts of Gazprom. No other highrises are planned.

Haven´t heard of any financial companies planning to move in there.

Medvedev Backs UNESCO Bid to Halt Gazprom Tower, Kommersant Says
By Maria Ermakova

May 21 (Bloomberg) -- President Dmitry Medvedev’s administration sent a letter to the St. Petersburg city government saying it supports efforts by the United Nations’ cultural arm to block the construction of Russia’s tallest building by OAO Gazprom, Kommersant reported. UNESCO, the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, warned last year that it may remove St. Petersburg’s three-centuries-old historic city center from its World Heritage Site if Gazprom builds the 400-meter (1,300-foot) Okhta Center. Medvedev is a former chairman of Gazprom, the world’s largest gas company, and a native of St. Petersburg.

Nah, it's only Medvedev coming out publicly against the tower. If it were Putin, then it's really in trouble.

I remember posting about this tower a few years back. Im so glad they didn't build it because there is no need to destroy such a beautiful historic area when this could easily be built somewhere else.

yep and that's why Medvedev is right on this one. They can build this skyscraper in other Big Russian cities which need the money more then St. Petersburg.

Why, just build it in Piter somewhere further from the downtown, like where they're already developing that Baltyskaya Zhemchuzhina district, or close to that, possibly in the company of two more supertalls...

I saw the construction site this morning. I hope this DOES NOT get built at this location. It will ruin St.Petersburg, this is such a lovely city, put the tower further out from the city center.

and the sun still has not set here yet, its almost 11 at night....anyways, St Petersburg deserves better.
