Even with Western economic sanctions and the Saudi's under cutting them on the crude oil market, Russia is still building for its future. I really respect Russia!

You can clearly see there is serious work being done. I'm sure it will rise as planned in the original design, at full height.

well, surely it's a serious project with serious people behind it, so it seems that LC will not face any heavy problems and be cancelled, unbuilt or sufficiently changed.

Although some design changes/simplification has already occurred comparing to last versions of previous Okhta Center project, e.g. star/web shape of facade. And some design work with important decisions making is still being done, e.g. highest part ("spire") of the tower is now planned to be done with metallic net, not with glass (officialy, for deicing of spire). So probably there is no telling what complete "original design" exactly will be.

Record-breaking foundation for Lakhta Center

The pouring of the bottom slab of the box shaped foundation of Lakhta Center high-rise building, which began on February 27, 2015 at 20.00, was successfully completed on March 1 at 21.20. During more than 49 hours of continuous concrete pouring, 19,624 cubic meters of concrete were cast in the foundation, which is three thousand cubic meters more than the Guinness record. An important construction stage of the complex has been completed.

«Record volumes, best technologies and innovative solutions are everyday reality for all construction projects of Gazprom, and Lakhta Center is no exception. Already this year we will see the first floor of the new building, and in 2018 the complex will open its doors not only for Gazprom employees, but also for all citizens of St. Petersburg and visitors of the city!» - said Alexey Miller, Gazprom’s Chairman of the Board of Directors, giving the signal to start pouring concrete into the base structure.

The height of 462 meters and weight of 670,000 tons dictate specific requirements for the foundation of the high-rise building. The box shaped foundation rests on 264 piles with a diameter of 2 m and a length of 65 m, buried 85 meters deep in the ground. It consists of two heavy structures: the top slab with a height of 2 m, and 3.6m bottom slab, exceeding standard floor height. Structure rigidity is ensured by a central core, additional overlapping slab and traverses (stiffening diaphragms).

The most robust structure of a high-rise building foundation, and the one most difficult to manufacture is the bottom slab. It has the shape of an equilateral pentagon with area of 5,670 square meters.

The concrete was delivered by 13 concrete plants in St. Petersburg. Truck mixers made 2,540 trips in total. On average, truck mixer was entering the construction site every minute.

Unparalleled strength of the plate is ensured by 15 levels of reinforcement grids made of 32 mm steel reinforcing bars. It took 9.2 thousand tons of metal, supplied from rolling mills all over Russia, just to reinforce the bottom slab foundation of the Lakhta Center tower. For comparison, roughly the same amount was used for the construction of the Eiffel Tower.

Project engineers will monitor quality, tension and deformations of foundation during further construction and operation of the building. For this purpose, 330 sensors have been installed in bottom slab body to provide accurate measurements.

The work is being performed by general contractor of Lakhta Center, Renaissance Construction. Working documentation was developed by Samsung S&T Corporation. Technical supervision is carried out by AECOM. Project design was developed by Gorproekt CJSC. Scientific and technical support is provided by N.M. Gersevanov NIIOSP OJSC RCC (NIC Stroilelstvo).
