MA used to serve YYZ not that long ago. There are some reports that they may be gone for good. I miss their 767s...

I don't think they ever made any money on them.

Toronto to be launched in 2012

Ethiopian was planning to begin flights this quarter to Toronto with 777-200LRs but postponed the launch of the new route. Mr Gebrermariam says Toronto is now planned to be launched in summer 2012 with two or three weekly 777-200LR flights. Like Washington DC, Toronto will be served non-stop on the eastbound leg but will stop in Rome going west.

Ethiopian is continuing to study other potential new destinations in North America. But for now the carrier plans to focus on Washington Dulles and Toronto. Both are Star Alliance hubs which will help Ethiopian connect with the rest of North America.

2-3 flights per week? Sounds as VFR type of thing.

Next year I would love to see the addition of:

TAM
Egyptair
At least one more Asian carrier
Qatar
Kuwait Airways
Aer Lingus

I actually don't think any one of these is unrealistic...maybe just Kuwait.

I think Irish market is tackled by Air Transat. That would be a tough one.

Egyptair eyes return to profitability and capacity growth in 2012

EgyptAir has decided to hold off on launching any new intercontinental routes, which tend to be more dependent on tourism traffic. For example, plans to launch new routes to Washington Dulles and Toronto Pearson this summer have been deferred to 2012.

Once the politics start to pay the role, than it becomes very unrealistic. As much as I would like to see it happen, I don't see Toronto Preason ever turning into any major North American hub. Air Canada is already a SA puppet/feeder airline, and the government always played some similar role as well.

I don't disagree with politics playing a huge role because it most definitely does. However, I would argue that Pearson is already a major North American hub. As it is, it's the 4th largest port of entry into North America behind JFK, LAX, and MIA. Given that MIA is predominantly Latin American traffic, I would agrue even further that YYZ has much more variety of international traffic and therefore plays an equally large role as MIA in terms of hub status. Having said that, there is MUCH more YYZ can do to become an even bigger hub. But yes, the government has to help make it happen.

Surprised none of the China mainland airlines serve YYZ though.

YYZ, and the government need to start giving airlines access to three flights a day (morning, afternoon, and night) with no strings attached, period, if they want to become a serious hub, and satisfy the consumer.

Numbers are not enough, YYZ could be so much more than what it is today, not to mention Toronto being a multi ethnic city with so many airlines not even seeing the day of light because of bureaucracy.

I think the GTAA would welcome as much competition and route development as possible. It's the government that restricts or allows access - although this is not unique to Canada and several other countries' governments fight hard to make sure their flag carrier is protected. Canada does seem to take it to an extreme though. But I agree, YYZ has way more potential!
