I agree with you that our currency is worth less but that isn't reflected in the prices of tickets; I don't see airline tickets being any cheaper, the $1000 five years ago is $850 today doesn't apply.

And by the way, Lufthansa will not send its B747-400 to Toronto between 30 August and 30 September 2013 as planned. It will still be operated with an A340-600.

Perhaps, if demand is justified or when LH gets even more 748s. As of the moment, it looks like LH is utilizing its A340s even more...

The demand is there, but it's about maximizing efficiency with aircraft deployment across the whole fleet.

Probably once they downsize Austrian and take over their long haul routes. Btw I decided to give a shot to Turkish because I am going to be flying to SJJ in the summer. Austrian wanted $2000 for the dates I wanted, so for that amount of cash, I went with TK comfort class. Can't wait to fly again on a mighty 773ER.

LH did fly the 747 to Toronto a long time ago. Here are some photos I took on my 747 flight to FRA in 2005 :

There were no PTV's back then for the overnight Atlantic crossing.

^That's the time when oil was way cheaper... My very first flight to YYZ was with them and, I still have a paper airplane that FA gave me to put together.

That's interesting... LH used to fly B744s to Manila as well, but it was downgraded to an A346 before it was canceled for multiple reasons. However, with a new ruling coming soon for the President's signature, LH is looking to resume Manila once again on a daily basis.

Wow, nice! I heard they brought SP-LPA out of retirement and it flew the YYZ route yesterday. How are they going to manage all the increases in service,YYZ JFK and ORD with such a small fleet for long haul? Supposedly the 787s might not fly until June or later.

The demand is there during the peak period and that's about it. YYZ is pretty slow for most european airlines. Keep in mind, that's with TK/EY/EK/QR having very limited landing rights.

I don't think that's true at all. I've flown KLM, LH, AF, and BA in low season several times and the flights have always been full. I agree that a 747 may not be necessary during October or March, but LH was going to fly one in the peak summer months.

The 787s will not fly until October. LOT is trying to get additional wide body aircraft; 767/777.

I was referring to the off peak season. KLM brings its double daily to a single daily. I am not sure about BA, but I know that they tend to replace their later arrival from a 747 to a 777. The rest cut down as well, especially the ones like OS, LO, Finnair that don't fly here daily in the winter. I had seen AF send a A330 over B777/A340.

Wow
Are you kidding me? So what's happening with those that paid for the premium economy, new business and now end up on a old 767?
