Let me check with Flight Radar 24 and Flight Board to see if that's the case.

Cool! I am going to try to snap a few photos. Also when I am back, I very tempted to try Air Serbia with connection to JFK from YYZ.

For any local YYZ spotters out there, the President of Mexico will be arriving this afternoon for an official visit, scheduled in at about 4:00pm with Mexican Airforce 788.... a rare visitor & sharp looking airplane...

AC pulling the plug on GIG in October. I guess with zika, rampant crime, and political upheaval, Rio has somewhat lost its appeal as a vacation destination for the time being.

While Rio is going, MNL is being increased to 4 times a week from the current 3. I wish Philippines's every success and it seems to be going well.

Absolutely. With the recent orders of 2 more 77Ws and 6 initial A359 aircraft, Philippine Airlines is looking to expand its operations to North America. In fact, by early December, PAL will increase service on one of its flagship routes to Los Angeles from 11x weekly to 2x daily (one AM flight, one PM flight), which will allow even more exposure by the carrier to the growing market and compete with other Transpacific carriers.

None at this time. Doubt that Winnipeg could sustain a flight to Manilla on a regular basis. It has taken a year or so to get 4 flights weekly to Toronto. All flights stop in Vancouver both ways.

Not at the moment, although the Manitoba Government wishes PAL to operate to that city. Before, it was rumored that Westjet ordered the Boeing 767-300ER for flights further from Canada, including the Philippines. However, since those planes are deployed to London and Hawaii, it may now be far-fetched for the airline to reassign one or two of those planes to do Hawaii and the Philippines, especially with range issues of that aircraft. If that's going to happen, it will require routing via Honolulu or another Hawaiian airport before continuing on to Manila and Canada.

Oh, and not helping matters is slot issues in Manila, in which it is already running at overcapacity (maximum of 30 flights per hour, now approaching 40). And new flights need to be relegated to overnight operations since the daytime and prime time ops are already operating beyond their limits. So if Westjet wants to go to Manila, it will have to wait until a new airport is built.

I never understood what's so special about Winnipeg which attracts so many Filipinos? Plenty of much larger cities across North America without such a large Filipino community.

Winterpeg is not so bad. It is like other cities and it is growing. I am sure there is potential but too cold for me. Way too cold. I am already suffering in Montrιal in winter.

Why do immigrants go to any city? Opportunity, a solid economy, high quality of life, and an established community. What separates Winnipeg from some other cities is the last factor. Manitoba has long had an independent provincial immigration program which was very successful in attracting Filipinos. They prospered, word spread, and it snowballed.

Most cities in Canada have a lot to offer immigrants but they need to establish a sizable community to get things rolling. People often go to a nation's largest cities because that's all they know about. It's not always the right place to go.
