Finnair to Return 757s to ILFC

This is a quote from www.flightglobal.com :

Oneworld carrier Finnair is to order five 'sharklet'-equipped Airbus A321s to replace Boeing 757-200s in its leisure fleet.

The airline becomes the launch customer for the model, which will be fitted with the new 'sharklet' wingtips designed to improve efficiency and extend range.

Finnair, which has been seeking a replacement for the 757s which conduct its leisure services, says the first delivery of the A321s will be in 2013. They will replace four 757s.

No engine selection for the twin-jets, which will have around 200 seats, has yet been made.

Does the a321 have the range to fly Helsinki - Toronto? Maybe we will see the a330 on the route??

Canada Service --the airline is still waiting for final approval from the CTA for its license to begin international scheduled service linking Beijing with Toronto on August 7th. The airline plans to use their Airbus A340-600s on the route operating three days per week (Mon/Wed/Sat) with flights arriving at Toronto(YYZ) at 1420hrs as flight CHH7975 and departing at 1600hrs as flight CHH7976 non-stop to Beijing. The airline will utilize Terminal 3 at Toronto. While the August 7th start date is pretty optimistic, the airline will begin service and another date announced once they receive their final license approval from the CTA.
Is it a decent airline? I noticed them flying to BUD as well...

Yes, I have been told the same thing.

Free Wi-Fi begins at Pearson Airport
7 August 2010
The Toronto Star

Free at last.

In a move that other airports made long ago, including Vancouver, the Greater Toronto Airports Authority announced that folks no longer will have to pay to check their email or surf the web at Canada's biggest airport.

"Our guests have told us that being able to stay connected while at the airport is important to them and that they expect this service to be complimentary," said Pamela Griffith-Jones, chief marketing and commercial officer for the GTAA. "We are delighted that we were able to make this possible, while maintaining our focus on reducing costs and improving value for money for our airlines and passengers."

GTAA spokesman Scott Armstrong told the Star in an email that they've received "good feedback from passengers so far." He also said free wi-fi was "one of the things that our passengers told us they expected through our research panel, www.yourvoiceatpearson.com.

"Offering free Wi-Fi services to Toronto Pearson's guests is an important element in the GTAA's commitment to serving the needs of its customers and helping to ensure an enjoyable travel experience," the GTAA's press release stated. "This free service is made possible through a marketing sponsorship agreement between the GTAA and Rogers Communications."

Since no one has added this, I will do so now. Kudos to the GTAA for a job well done.

Toronto Pearson's Evolution Recognized with "Most Improved" Global Industry Award
Date of Release: 2010/06/07

Toronto Pearson International Airport was honoured today by airlines around the globe with the 2010 IATA Eagle Award for Most Improved Airport. Awarded by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the global industry award recognizes the significant strides made by Toronto Pearson in its commitment to working with the air carrier industry.

The IATA Eagle Awards are presented in recognition of an airport’s outstanding performance in airline satisfaction, cost efficiency and continuous improvement. Marilynne Day-Linton, Chair of the Board of Directors for the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA), which operates Toronto Pearson, accepted the prestigious award from IATA, the leading airline industry body, at IATA’s 66th Annual General Meeting and World Air Transport Summit taking place in Berlin, Germany.

“Recognition by IATA with the Eagle Award for Most Improved Airport represents a signification milestone for Toronto Pearson,” said Lloyd McCoomb, President and CEO of the GTAA. “There is no greater praise an organization can receive than that from its customers. This award validates the efforts of our employees and our strategic direction. We have worked hard to make Toronto Pearson more competitive. We know there are challenges ahead but we are committed to continue working with the airlines to make Toronto Pearson a leading global airport and the airport of choice in North America for air carriers and for passengers.”

The GTAA has taken significant initiatives to reduce costs and increase its commercial revenues. In January of 2010 it implemented a 10 per cent reduction in landing and terminal charges, which was the third consecutive year of reduced fees.

“GTAA is a great turnaround story. A change in management drove change throughout the organization and delivered much-needed performance improvements,” said Giovanni Bisignani, Director General and CEO of IATA. “We look forward to further efficiency and performance improvements from these role models for all infrastructure providers. Toronto Pearson must continue to lead the way in setting the standards for performance, cost efficiency and continuous improvements for others to strive for," said Mr. Bisignani.

“Toronto Pearson is Air Canada's major hub. With recent improvements that now have our operations under one roof, its advantageous geographic position in North America and the GTAA's strong support and partnership, we firmly believe Toronto can be transformed into a leading global hub that will serve as both a major gateway to North America for international travellers and a connection point for flights to virtually anywhere in the world," said Calin Rovinescu, President and Chief Executive Officer of Air Canada.

“This award recognizes the work we have done with our air carrier partners to make Toronto Pearson a more efficient and effective place for them to do business. This is only the beginning – we will continue to work closely with the air carriers to make Toronto Pearson as competitive as possible.” said Mr. McCoomb.

Here is the bird that took me to London this summer. I suppose it was an early model 777-200 series. It was a nice treat from a 767.

BA off to LHR. T3 just before boarding.

Here is the map of YYZ-LHR route, heading for the Atlantic crossing.

(took them with my blackberry)

Actually, both JAL and All Nippon operate several 'fall foliage' charters each year...this year, ANA have advised they plan to operate to YYZ on 20SEP, 02OCT & 14OCT...still waiting for the JAL schedules....

Tonight's JL flight is something else entirely- it's a flight bringing relief aid to Haiti, it is stopping enroute in YYZ for the night (actually here now), and it is heading out to finish its journey to Port au Prince early tomorrow morning...

Virgin Atlantic has applied for and received permission to do charter flights to Canada. Anyone privy to plans? Is this leading to something more?
