TUNIS (Tunisia) | New Enfidha International Airport | 7million PAX | Under Construction (2009)

hi, I heard that the new international airport in Tunisia is going to be built after all. So hopefully itīll be ready in 2010.
We should have a forum for tunisia who according to the World Economic Forum is the arab-worlds and africas most competitive country.

It's still a nice propaganda dream..
works hasn't started yet , neither they will start next year , or in 5 years..
The Carthage Airport capacity is still more than enough for the tunisian traffic.

TAV building works start of Enfidha Airport Tunisia

TAV Airports Holding, the leading airports operator in Turkey, will lay the foundation for the Tunisian Enfidha International Airport on July 24.

TAV Airports Holding, the leading airports operator in Turkey, will lay the foundation for the Tunisian Enfidha International Airport on July 24. TAV will operate the airport for 40 years and anticipates as much as EUR 400 mln in investment within the next two years.

President of the Tunisian Republic Zine El Abidine Ben Ali will also participate in the groundbreaking ceremony of the airport in Enfidha, a tourist spot for Tunisia.

In a press release published by TAV, it was noted that the company has become a global name because of its international successes and ambitious projects. Now the company will carry its experience in the sector to North Africa. The release also stated the company plans to start operating the Enfidha airport in 2009.

The CEO and executive board chairman of TAV, emphasized that the preferential agreement signed with Tunisian government on May 18, 2007 granted them the right to operate both the Monastir and Enfidha international airports, adding: These two airports both have large capacities. As TAV Holding, our goal is to make the Enfidha airport the regional centre in Africa. With the help of this project we will establish stronger commercial relations with Tunisia, a formerly friendly country to Turkey also underlined that the four-stage operation to be executed during management of the airport will provide for a capacity of 22 million passengers. The airport will be built on 4300 hectares of land. In the first phase the terminal building will be 90000 square meters. He also noted that a new terminal building will be built at the Enfidha International Airport and it will incorporate an open parking lot, a runway, a jet way and new service premises with taxi lanes.

It has started, I drove past it on the highway when I was looking at the industrial park (which is on the other side nearby)

They are just doing the heavy clearing work when I was there in August.

In recent years Tunisia has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Africa. The attraction of the Sahara Desert, its temperate climate, bright skies, fine hotels and beach resorts, golf courses and other features make it a must-see country for adventure-seeking travelers, particularly Europeans.

In order to handle the increase in air traffic, Tunisia’s Ministry of Communications, Technology and Transport, along with the Tunisian Airport Authority (OACA), made the bold decision to erect a world-class airport on a 6,500-hectare site in Enfidha, in the heart of the country’s primary northeast tourist region. In being awarded the tender, TAV Construction and TAV Airports Holding beat out some of the world’s leading airport building and operation companies. The BOT tender, a 40-year concession, also includes the operation of the existing nearby Monastir Airport, about 60 km away, thereby eliminating any unnecessary competition between the two facilities.

Situated approximately 80 km south of the capital city Tunis, the new airport will be an architectural and aesthetic wonder, boasting of the latest technology and first class facilities and services, both for passengers and the airlines themselves.

The terminal will be over 90,000 mē area and is originally designed for a capacity of 7,000,000 passengers annually. With future expansion it will be able to accommodate up to 22,000,000 travelers per year by the middle of the century. The initial work will include a total connected apron area of 72,000 mē with a capacity to handle 18 aircraft. The remote apron area will cover 57,000 mē, sufficient for 14 airplanes. The runway length will be 3,300 meters, while the width will total 75 meters. In all, 18 passenger boarding bridges will be built, along with check-in counters, baggage carousels, immigration and customs booths, etc. commensurate with the size of the airport. Every traveler’s need has been thought about in detail and the airport will feature shops, boutiques, restaurants, cafes and every other service imaginable. The finished work will ensure safe, comfortable and enjoyable travel for all who come to this enchanting land.

Construction on the new Enfidha International Airport began in June of 2007.. The operation contract will begin when the building work is finished, around October 2009.

There is also a project to extend the Fast train network to enfidha ..

i guess that at the beginning the aiport will mainly host the charter for the toursitic areas of Sousse Mahdia and Hamammet ...
