The Velaro trainsets are to be deployed on the Ankara - Konya high speed line as well as the Ankara - Istanbul route which is being upgraded with the construction of new alignments and rebuilding of existing routes for higher speeds.

Current services are operated using a fleet of 12 six-car trains supplied by CAF in 2009 and now maintained by Alstom.

Did they just ordered them or there was a bidding process? If so who were the other bidders?

There was a bidding process for 7 sets and Siemens won. Soon there will be a a new biding for around 120 sets but there will be a condition. The sets must be produced in Turkey.

Do you know anything about other bidders? I wonder because Korean KTX was the planned one at the beginning also Chinese are building the railway, I wonder whether they proposed a train, too.

The bidding didn't take place yet but Siemens, Bombardier, Rotem and CHR were mentioned to be interested in a newspaper article.

I was talking about 7 trains from Siemens. I guess other bidders are not known or do not exist.

oh that one.

Siemens: 244 million euro
Alsado-Bombardier: 317 million euro
Alstom: 388 million euro
CNR: 263 millin dollar

CNR was the lowest bidder but Siemens got it. Don't ask me why. There must have been some other criteria.

Hi I have a question:

- What is the actual travel time on HSR between Istanbul and Ankara?

- What is the price? It is more expensive travel by train or by bus? I know between Ankara and Istanbul all the stretch is by motorway.

Well, in Austria most tenders are not based on the cheapest offer, but the best offer. I suppose Siemens came up with the better overall product.

Until June 2015, the YHT will terminate in Pendik. Once the urban rail lines in the rest of the city are modernized, the train will continue from there and stop in bostanci, Sögütlücesme, Bakirköy, and Halkali. Some trains will not continue into Europe from Sögütlücesme, but terminate in Haydarpasa.

In the more far away future, it is planned to create a new rail line far away from the city in the north to cross the Bosporus via the new highway bridge. At the moment, large stretches of untouched forest are being destroyed for this bridge. The train will then swerve around the city and once again terminate in Halkali.

Congratulations from Britain for Turkey on building its HS railways! I'm British but Turkey is almost my second home, I holiday on the Lycian Coast almost every year.

One thing, please build a route down to Dalaman or Fetiyhe so its easy to get to Istanbul from the South Coast!

As the route is not finished yet, we cannot say. Please wait a few more months until operations start, probably in spring 2014 (elections).
So far TCDD has made YHT amazingly cheap, much cheaper than HSR anywhere in Europe and cheaper than busses to quickly snatch up the market. However in the long run they will probably increase the prices, as demand will rise.

Most discussants from the Turkish forum would agree that one of the greatest mistakes of the Turkish HSR program is to give priority to Eastern routes (Sivas) rather than popular holiday spots such as Antalya.

Maybe the east's getting the first phase/s so that any encountered problem can be learned before tackling the west, a region that is probably under far more scrutiny
