Metropolis plan for Kuantan town!
Metropolis plan for Kuantan town
Tuesday December 19, 2006 By FARIDAH BEGUM TheStar ![]() Artist’s impression of Kuantan town in 2015. KUANTAN: A high-speed train linking Kuala Lumpur and Kuantan, the Kuantan Tower as a landmark along the banks of Kuantan River, two new international tourist towns namely Cherating and Pantai Sepat, and several new townships are among the proposals in the new draft plan for the capital town of Pahang. In its bid to achieve city status, the draft plan which will be launched today will see many new developments in the town centre including the relocation of the state administration to its proposed site in Indera Mahkota town while its present site in Jalan Gambut will be turned into an arts and cultural centre named “Civic Precinct.” Jalan Gambut will also be turned into the Corporate Street for offices, Tanjung Lumpur into the Corporate Promenade for multi-national companies and large corporations to house their offices and the Padang Lallang area will be converted into a Small Office Home Office (SOHO) enclave. Tanjung Lumpur will also see its strength as the corporate promenade strengthened with the proposed Tanjung Lumpur Trade Centre for business conferences and tie-ups. The MPK fields in the centre of town will be turned into squares namely Dataran Teruntum, which may follow the like of Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur with a proposed underground carpark, and Dataran Makmur near the existing Stadium Darul Makmur. The stadium will be turned into a bazaar venue when the International Sports Centre in Indera Mahkota is ready. Indera Mahkota, which will have the distinction of being home to the state administration, will house the Kuantan International Convention and Exhibition Centre besides a technology park. According to the East Coast Region Town and Country Planning Department director Wan Hassan Wan Ismail, the proposed development would see a conurbation between Chendor and Pekan, which means several townships linked together and this would form a metropolis. “Such a development will see Kuantan becoming a gateway to the East Coast and bring development to a new level, offering a better lifestyle for the people in this region,” he said in an interview. He said Kuantan would also create the mini Multimedia Corridor with the development of Putra Square in the town centre. The draft plan will be on display for one month until Jan 19 next year for the public to view and make their comments and objections to authorities. Besides the three permanent sites for the draft display at the Kuantan Municipal Council (MPK) office in Tanah Putih, the state Town and Country Planning Department in Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak in Bandar Indera Mahkota and the Kuantan District and Land Office in Jalan Masjid, the draft plan will also be exhibited in eight other places for the convenience of the public. The mobile display sites which will be held for town days in each place will begin at the Berjaya Megamall lobby (Dec 23 and 24); Jaya Gading Community Hall (Dec 26 and 27); Sungai Lembing Community Hall (Dec 28 and 29); Beserah Community Hall (Jan 3 and 4); Cherating Community Hall (Jan 8 and 9); Bukit Goh Community Hall (Jan 11 and 12); Peramu Community Hall (Jan 15 and 16); and Gambang Community Hall (Jan 17 and 18). A new township, to be known as Bandar Indera Mahkota II, will also be created, which would also be the central point of Kuantan where an integrated transport hub will be developed. “This is where the Kuantan Sentral will be located, integrating the various modes of transportation, including the new high-speed train plying the Kuala Lumpur-Kuantan route. “Also in the long-term planning will be the fast train between Johor Baru and Kota Baru which will run through Kuantan,” he said. Wan Hassan said extensive studies and discussions had been held between MPK, the department and its consultant town planners, ANZ Planners Sdn Bhd, to ensure the developments proposed under the 2004-2015 draft plan would create a metropolis, which in turn would enhance the quality of life and increase the economic development of the region and the states within it. The draft plan, emphasises the growth and development of the Kuantan town centre under the auspices of the National Physical Plan, brown sites or vacant land within the town centre should be developed first before the suburbs of a town. Among the proposals for the brown sites are centralised parking areas in Jalan Tun Ismail, Civic Precinct where the current state administration resides and beneath the MPK field in front of Kompleks Teruntum. The draft plan also touches on the transformation of Jalan Bukit Ubi into a protocol road and as the new entrance road into the town centre. The plan, said Wan Hassan also highlights the preservation of heritage buildings and the environment, especially the mangrove swamps and also the creation of Sungai Lembing as a heritage town which will house a safari as a tourist attraction. The list is exhaustive at best but the end results will depend on the people and the authorities within the capital town and their will to ensure Kuantan develops in the right direction and provides economic and career opportunities for its residents.

the picture look a little bit like Melaka Raya, with tall buildings with sea view, full of shop offices and a commercial centre. When the revolving tower in Melaka completed, lagi sama with the picture.

Plan To Introduce Kuantan-KL High-Speed Train By 2015
December 19, 2006 22:51 PM KUANTAN, Dec 19 (Bernama) -- Travel by train from Kuala Lumpur to this Pahang capital will be faster than by road by 2015 if a high-speed train service between the two destinations becomes a reality. This is part of a proposal in the National Physical Plan to turn Kuantan into the eastern region's main conurbation centre, said Director-General of Town and Country Planning, Peninsular Malaysia, Datuk Mohd Fadzil Mohd Khir. He said the proposal would be implemented under four-core development projects of the Kuantan District Locality Plan 2004-2015. "Travel time for cargo and passenger trains will be shortened when the service is commissioned," he said at the publicity campaign of the draft of the Kuantan District Locality Plan launched by Johor Local Government and Environment Committee Chairman Datuk Hoh Khai Mun, here Tuesday. The text of Mohd Fadzil's speech was read out by the Deputy Director-General I Kamalruddin Shamsudin. Mohd Fadzil said the plan also spelt out sustainable conservation of sensitive environmental areas including forest reserves, coastal areas, swampy land, natural lakes and hilly areas in the town. He said the plan proposed to gazette the turtle landing area in Cendur as a national turtle sanctuary and to develop the former Sungai Lembing mine as a tourist attraction. The public is invited to comment on the draft prepared by the Kuantan Municipal Council. It will be displayed for one month. -- BERNAMA |

Kabinet lulus projek kereta api laju Kuala Lumpur - Kuantan

Empat bandar baru jana pembangunan ekonomi

Kuantan Sentral coming up
21 Dec 2006 M. Hamzah Jamaludin KUANTAN: A state-of-the-art railway station similar to KL Sentral will be built on a 24-hectare site in Bukti Goh here. The integrated railway station will be built in tandem with the proposed express rail link from Kuala Lumpur to Kuantan. Construction will begin in about seven years and should be finished by 2015. It will be the main connecting point between the west coast railway network and the proposed east coast express rail system. The present connection does not go through Kuantan. It runs from Kuala Lumpur to Gemas, Mentakab, Pasir Mas and Tumpat. The Kuala Lumpur-Kuantan express rail link and Kuantan Sentral are among the national projects included in the Kuantan Local Plan 2004-2015. The draft is on display now. Kuantan Municipal Council president Datuk Mohammad Safian Ismail said the Kuala Lumpur-Kuantan rail link will be about 245km long. The trains will run at up to 190kph and make the journey in 60 to 90 minutes. "We have identified the alignment for the proposed track. "Most of the areas involved are private land," he said. If there are no objections, he said the council will submit the draft to the Town and Country Planning Department in March so it can be gazetted, after which, the authorities are expected to begin acquiring the land. A year ago ,Town and Country Planning Department director-general Datuk Mohd Fadzil Mohd Khir told all east coast local authorities to identify the route for the proposed express rail service that will link Johor Baru to Kuala Terengganu and Kota Baru. The east coast express railway system will be part of the Fast Inter-city Railway System (First) that will link all major cities in the country. Apart from Kuantan, the east and west coast railways will have a connection between Kota Baru and Alor Star. The railway network will become the backbone of the National Integrated Transportation System. It is part of the proposed Trans-Asian Railway network. "First"was approved during the National Physical Planning Council meeting chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi last year.

Exactly, they're just talks right now. There were talks about building a bridge to Sumatra if I remember correctly, there were talks Disneyland would come to Johor.. Talks are just that, mere talk, they don't necessarily mean something concrete would come out of them.
Lets just wait shall we? This might be just what has been so common these days, more trumpeting, showboating, pride mongering TALK.
