As for now there are plenty of buildings and space targeted for future development and some include demolishing old structures but all of these are in SOMA's south part and Eastern SF, where there is still a lot of room for developments, there's no sight of another Mega Tall in the near future but there is still room if any company like say, Facebook or Google suddenly wanted to build one for each in SF. Everything north of Market and all classic downtown SF will stay without major vertical developments at least for the next decade or so.

Eastern SF is changing so fast that instead of neighborhoods developing, it feels like SF is giving birth to another different city, even the vibe there is different.

Even if there is another building that is over 1000 feet tall, it would take at least a couple decades for it to happen.

It all depends on how the Salesforce Tower will impact land costs around SoMa in the long run, not to mention other economic factors that may be beyond SF's control (e.g. tech economy).

And by the way, the part I'm ecstatic about with that tower is found towards the base and the basement... with the rebirth of the Transbay Terminal slated for Fall 2017 (per SFMTA), I am looking at climbing up to the bus platform level and see all those buses go through for the Bay Bridge.

I don't see why it couldn't be mustered again -- especially given the mounting economic and political pressure on the City to build denser and more vertical.
I thought the Salesforce tower was chopped from 1,200 to 1,070 purely because of concerns about shadows falling on union square and Justin Herman Plaza. Earthquake worries didn't have anything to do with it (height doesn't matter much as long as the foundation and design is done right...in fact, taller structures inherently absorb earthquake waves better than squat buildings). Though I could be remembering wrong.

There is some great news today. They started building the exterior of the crown today, after several weeks without a gain in height :-)

Unfortunately, they did chop it down from 1200 to 1070 feet because of mainly shadows. Just too bad.

Hmm. A spire might not look bad on the SF tower...

Here's from an entirely different angle... from on board a Muni bus along US-101, close to the Vermont Curve (Vermont Street exit):
