I wouldn't be surspised if workers a top of the buildings look at each other from both towers every morning and say, 'let's make those MF's bite the dust'

Too bad that there might not be another building built at over 1000 feet tall.

Amen. It's sad that more supertalls are a pipe dream in the city's current political climate. Hopefully the state and city initiatives to combat housing costs and increase density will gain enough popular momentum to defeat the entrenched NIMBYs. With housing costs causing top talent to leave the City for good jobs in more affordable cities, I could see the government forcing the issue, which could result in

But I think if SF is going to be among the best global skylines, not just in North America, it would take some 1400+ foot office towers. The strongest companies in SF almost all prefer campus-style offices, not skyscrapers (Salesforce being a notable exception). Oceanwide is an interesting experiment in creating a "vertical campus" and it's possible that will catch on. But unless it does, I just don't see there being the political will for more supertall offices, now or maybe ever.

Modern, top-tier office tenants have certain expectations -- great views, unobstructed floorplans, and very high ceilings compared with previous generations of towers.

Take a look at some of the high-end office towers rising in NYC: One Manhattan West, 995', 69 floors; 3 Hudson Blvd, 1034', 66 floors; One Vanderbilt, ~1300' to the roof, 57 floors.

Salesforce tower is in the same class as those.

The design of One World Trade Center fits SF way better than it fits NYC (sans the base). If only...

I don't know about that. But, the new Oceanwide Center they are building and the 181 Fremont Building could have also been built at over 1000 feet tall. Too bad they chose to not build it that high for both.

all over the news and KCBS yesterday, the topping out of Salesforce. Not sure about 1500 footers here though. The amount this sticks out and its only 1070 ft makes me think that a 1500 footer is way too tall for The City.

Agreed, though a 1500 footer would stick out and look kind of funny in any American city that isn't NYC or Chicago.

No, neither of them were ever proposed to be 1000' tall. 181 Fremont was originally proposed as 900', but the site only got upzoned to 700' (at roof level of occupied floors, which is what SF height limits refer to, rather than structural height). And Oceanwide center was always proposed at its current height of 910'...and the site is only zoned to 850', so a supertall was never possible there anyway.

A long time ago, there was a different proposal for that site by renzo piano, that was 1200' tall, but it was obviously never approved, and then the site was only upzoned to 850'. And then we got Oceanwide.

Do you know why the original plan for this Salesforce Tower was for it to be 1200 feet tall but was later reduced to 1070? If it was 1200 feet tall, then there would be no debate about which building is really the taller tower between Salesforce and WGC in LA. Too bad they scrapped that 1200 feet tall height. And, I still cannot believe given how much the people talk about how great the views are from up there that there isn't an observation deck. It makes no sense not to have one considering SF is a tourist town with the great views.

This 1070 ft iteration is a better aesthetic fit for the San Francisco skyline. 1200 ft would have looked odd. I dont know why some people are so up in arms about the Wilshire Grand tower height vs. this tower's height. They are both spectacular looking towers and they fit very well in their respective cities' skylines.
