1070ft is a considerable height, any structure of this height would be a feature in any skyline outside of Asia.

Sales Force Tower here is all about visual effect, all the surrounding buildings in SOMA are very short next to it and this makes it look way taller.

Nice tower. SF could build another one of these in the low-rise area to the East someday? There seems to be plenty of room to build more talls.

I hope they build another tall like this in the South Beach Area. In fact, from an outsider point of view, the entire area there should be covered with skyscrapers. The demand is surely there.

I think they will not build another building as tall as Salesforce Tower. The next tallest building will be one of the buildings for Oceanwide Center. I wish they would have made the Transamerica Pyramid over 1k feet tall in the first place.

South Beach has height restrictions, because of rich NIMBYs who are worried about views and traffic...the usual bullshit.

Central SOMA (the area along 4th street running from Moscone Center to mission bay), has been upzoned, so there will be some new highrises close to south beach that are in the 100'-400' range there, but none along the waterfront/in south beach itself. Unfortunately the heights of the central SOMA plan are restrained too, also because of NIMBYs (thankfully the city didn't adopt an even shorter plan).

Thanks for the info. Yes, it's a shame about the NIMBYs.

Yeah, it's frustrating, though not as bad as is it used to be. Just look at the salesforce tower. For a while it seemed like the city would never change the zoning so that it could build something that tall.

And to clarify, it's not entirely NIMBYs that have led to lower heights, but they've played a huge part. The planning department for example has a vision for the city's skyline, that's "sculpted" with peaks and valleys (rather than a wall/tabletop effect, like the city's pre-2000's skyline), so even if NIMBYs had no input, there were always going to be varying height limits.

But if it weren't for the NIMBYs, the maximum height limit of the central SOMA plan might be 600' instead of 400', and a few 200' buildings would become 300' buildings, and instead of being capped at about 100' (an improvement, to be fair), the western SOMA plan would have areas zoned for highrises, etc....or Salesforce might have been 1200', 181 Fremont might have been 900', the Transamerica pyramid might have been 1150', etc, etc.

From my visit to SF last month, this is the skyline silhouette from afar.
