You will find many versions of the "parapet" or "mechanical penthouse" but MarshallKnight is correct about the latest version.

Originally, the building was to be ultra-green and go for the top LEED rating. One of the original features, as I posted a page or two back, were a pair of wind turbines inside the "parapet":

https://www.google.com/search?q=Tran...l%3B996%3B1024

Much of this has been "value engineered" away and I'm not sure what LEED rating the building will now get (it's still pretty green as are all new SF office towers). Anyway, removing the turbines left a largely empty space but cutting it off would make the building appear truncated, yet keeping the tapering shape while adding occupied floors would yield top floors with pretty small floor plates so I guess they just decided to keep the shape and leave the space empty (but lit fairly dramatically at night).

I see, thanks for clarifying this folks

The surface of the parapet walls on the new version has holes, however it looks like a higher percentage of the surface of the walls is filled than empty so I would consider it a solid crown and therefore a 326 meter building

Nobody south of Portland cares about that either.[/QUOTE]

That isn't very friendly. Speaking for the entire state seems a bit Calicentric.(new word)

Indeed, some spirer appear very small, like the Burj Khalifa spire appears very tiny, but still there can sit four people on top.

Does anyone know if this will be steel or concrete construction?

Hopefully steel because it will rise faster.

Almost certainly steel. I think I even read as much but can't recall where.

Re spires, this building has its own thread in "Skyscrapers" but I really like its spire . . . and it will be rising at the same time as the Salesforce Tower only a block away (these 2 buildings are the only ones that will have "sky bridges" to the park atop the TranBay Terminal):

https://www.google.com/search?q=181+...nt%3B568%3B510

The building is 700' to the roof, 802' to the tip of the spire.

Great, this one will be fun to watch rise, especially on the Oxblue webcam.

I concur... almost as bad as "Willis Tower" or "Freedom Tower" (Although 1WTC is not named that anymore people still call it that unfortunately.)

Agreed. But it's just a name. Hopefully there will be a new tenant at some point in the future and it'll change. Oh well. At least it's moving forward. That's all that really matters.

Khalifa Tower? Kingdom Tower? Chrysler Building?

Naming a building for the principle tenant or owner is pretty standard. SF's former tallest was named for the TransAmerica Insurance Company when it was built for and by them.

Why couldn't Oracle or Calypso Tech have bought naming rights!? The Oracle Tower or Calypso Tower sound cool and hip. Salesforce Tower sounds awful. It's probably the worst name outside of a 'Kentucky Fried Chicken Tower'

LOl, it could be even far worse than that. Imagine if it would be called "We have the Zenith" or "Oh My God"

Kind of militaristic name for a company, don't you think?

"General, our bridgehead in sector 9G is cornered by enemy customers! We need salesforce support!"

Yeah, they already get the TransAmerica Pyramid, to continue the tradition this should be TransBay. And in such a gay friendly city, with a large population of transgender people, it would made sense.

But whatever, it is already named salesforce.
