Very good news for the Salesforce tower! Digging has commenced! You can clearly see the backhoes excavating and the beginnings of the bracing that will probably end up looking similar to the Fremont Street tower at the upper part of the picture. This is very exciting. Finally.

Indeed, it would be nice to get an update on the progress of the excavation.

Last time I was there last week there was a couple of excavators that were below street level already around the middle of the site. They are digging and removing dirt every day now.

Nice pic Techniques. I was down there Thursday and I went in the other building on the other side of the site to see if I could find a place to get a picture but could not. Glad that you were able too! Looks like the hole is about 20 to 25 feet deep now. I wonder how much farther down they have to go? 20 or 30 feet maybe?

Wow, its nice to see something new in SF. It looks like it has been a while a project of this magnitude took place.

Love San Francisco but i can't help but think that Salesforce is such a crap name "Couldn't they have come up with something a bit better than that".

"Salesforce.com" is the name of the huge cloud computing company that leased half the tower and bought one building and leased another (350 Mission) across the intersection creating a truly giant campus in the center of the city.

See https://www.salesforce.com

Mark Benioff, the CEO of Salesforce, has also turned into San Francisco's most prominent new philanthropist, donating, in just one example, $100 million to the city's new children's hospital.

Benioff's new office will be on the top floor of this tower--the highest office space in the city which, in a way, he deserves.

So, no . . . the name will almost certainly stay.

It's been forever, in a sense, since this will be the city's tallest. The TransBay pyramid and, I believe, one or two other projects were originally proposed at this height but shortened by public demand before built.

This one was proposed at 1200 ft and shortened to 1070. But they had to leave it at that height in order to induce a developer to pay the amounts for the site they needed to cover the costs of the governmental development of the TransBay Terminal next door. Government in San Francisco may not be terribly enthusiastic about tall buildings but when it needs the money itself, it can compromise principles.
