A bit off topic but 6 tech companies including Salesforce are looking to divest in Indiana (according to reports) - Hey Marc, build another tower in San Francisco and move the 2,000 employees OUT of Indiana!

======================================================

"Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff canceled the company’s events in Indiana after Gov. Mike Pence signed a law on Thursday that could protect business owners who refuse to serve LGBT couples.

“Today we are canceling all programs that require our customers/employees to travel to Indiana to face discrimination,” Benioff tweeted.

That followed a tweet from Benioff on Wednesday, saying that the San Francisco-based cloud-computing company would reduce its investment in Indiana as a result of “outrage” over the bill, known as the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. The law will let individuals and corporations use their religious beliefs as a defense if they are sued for denying service to LGBT customers."

City of SF followed suit today per Mayor Lee--City will not pay for any employee official travel to Indiana. Other tech giants including Apple and Twitter (as well as the Indiana Chamber of Commerce it should be said) have expressed disagreement but Salesforce may be in a special position because it recently paid over $2 billion to acquire a company headquartered in Indiana. Wonder if they'll move it if this new law stays on the books.

That's what I see in the hole in the photo, so it may well have.

I'm thinking that won't happen. Yes at least one transfer out has happened but
Marc has said:

"The new Indiana legislation is an important 1st step. The damage has been fixed, and a door is open to the future. "

So hopefully the Indy SalesForce tower will be back on the table.

Looks like things are getting back to status quo and the R's are now very open to new legislation to author LGBT protections.

Let's not hijack this thread with discussion of the RFRA. However, on the subject of Benioff/Salesforce building another tower, you may not be aware that he/they have already leased all of 350 Mission and bought the existing building on a third corner of the same intersection (Mission & Fremont). With the Salesforce Tower, they will soon occupy a campus that includes 3 out of 4 corners.

This photo shows 350 Mission (center) and the building they bought (left). The building on the right is the Millenium Tower, a condo and the photographer is standing on the corner where the Salesforce Tower will be.

I congratulate San Francisco for building this new trophy of a building. It will be a fine addition to the skyline. The design is conservative, not especially bold or unique ... but too many skyscrapers look cheesy already and San Francisco does not need one of those.

Let me try to elucidate: Te buildings in that rendering are what you'd have to call "massing studies" in the sense that the design of a couple of them have been greatly refined and, in one case, radically changed. The most dramatic shift has been the abandonment Renzo Piano's design for the twin-towered structure (q.v. 50 First St) to the right of the Salesforce Tower, which appears second tallest to it, in favor of a much bulkier design by Norman Foster. But the good news is that many of them are already either complete or under construction. The fairly dense collection of towers to the left of the Salesforce are on the various blocks of the TransBay Transit District which will actually be denser than appears rendered to me:

What is identified on this map as "Parcel T" is the Salesforce Tower. Block 6 is 299 Fremont, now topped out. The unlabled block bounded by Fremont, Beale, Howard and Natoma--the tallst tower to the left of the Salesforce--is 181 Fremont, under construction (each of these buildings have threads). Block 1 is the Studio Gang project still being planned.

Block 9 is this 400 Ft tower supposed to get started next year.

Block 5 is a 550 FT office design on the site for which the developer is expected to close this year.

Finally, here's another and maybe more dramatic look at the built-out neighborhood (with more current versions of the building designs):

Its crazy how much taller SF is getting, it wasn't too long ago that it had a rather low amount of skyscrapers for its population, that is changing fast.

As someone who has been all over North America, has seen tens of thousands of pictures of cities around the world, and has looked at countless statistics....I just don't agree that SF has a low amount of skyscrapers for it's population. Not by North American standards at least, or by European standards, or African ones for that matter (SF has far more high rise buildings and "skyscrapers" than the vast majority of cities on all three of those continents). It is true that the skyline is anemic compared to most big Asian cities, a few middle eastern cities, and many big south american cities though (it has taller tallests than the majority of South American cities, however). Or compared to NYC, Chicago, or Toronto, of course....but then so are most cities in comparison.

Your statement is really only true if you use an extra tall definition for "skyscraper" (which SSC does, in my opinion). To be fair, there is no single agreed-upon definition of "skyscraper" (more like dozens of different ones), but if you use the definition that SSC does, than there are like only 50 skyscrapers in all of America

But yes, regardless of what one considers to be a "skyscraper", SF is definitely getting taller, and we're finally getting a lot of glass in our sea of concrete.
