Its the Transbay Terminal ... where Caltrain/Amtrak Trains will interface with the City Buses and taxis.

Salesforce Tower will be integrated into the Terminal and have direct access to the park on top.

The "skyscraper" 181 Fremont (q.v.) also has direct access to the rooftop park.

Here's a cross section of the building:

Interesting. While the core looks tremendous, the exterior steel columns look surprisingly thin. Perhaps it is just by comparison.
Nice to see this progressing well.

The scale of this project is really impressive. Not just a new tower but a completely new block!

I like this because it shows how it meets the street:

3 blocks really. The terminal is 3 blocks long and will have, adjacent to it, besides the supertall, 2 "skyscrapers" and, eventually, across the street, another "close-to-being-supertall" (50 First) designed by Foster of London.

They probably are fairly thin (light). The design seems to suspend the building from the massive core. Just about all of SF's recently-built very tall buildings have some kind of unusual design feature, whether it's an exoskeleton, "tuned liquid damping", or a kind of outrigger design I can't explain so I'll quote it:

Quote:
Rising out of the foundation are the concrete core and large, tall columns of steel-reinforced concrete called outriggers. The core is attached to the outrigger columns by diagonal, steel buckling-restrained braces which are designed to dissipate energy during an earthquake through controlled hysteretic behavior. This type of advanced seismic system performs in a manner similar to that of shock absorbers. The braces are also encased in concrete and steel to further mitigate risk of buckling and strength loss. Also of note is the controlled-rocking system which features vertical post-tensioning which runs the height of the building through ducts within the reinforced-concrete shear-wall core.
