Rather surreal to see this building finally rise after watching it for so many years as just a hole in the ground.

People cannot seem to get used to the fact that in the Bay Area--earthquake country--about half the construction time for a multi-hundred-foot-or-more building is spent on the foundations. This one has caissons (pilings) going down from 265 to about 300 ft (in various parts of the excavation) to bedrock and then a 14 ft thick reinforced concrete foundation pad which required 18 hours of work from 1,300 trucks delivering 12,000 cubic yards of concrete to the site. This foundation in itself was a massive construction project.

Construction, in fact, started in 2013 (it may seem like "so many years ago" but it's really just 2) and is scheduled to be finished at the end of 2017. The building rose above the pavement as 2015 became 2016--just about the midpoint; right on schedule.

Its about time, since it took several years to finally rise above edges of the hole.

Yada yada yada.

It took 2 years (construction began in 2013, it rose above street level as 2016 began)--to essentially build a 300 ft subterranean structure anchoring it to bedrock. This is absolutely normal timing for the Bay Area. You can generally figure ½ the construction time is spent on foundations that will withstand an 8.0 earthquake and that, as it turns out, is just about what it took for this building.

These repetitive "it was just a hole for so long" comments from people who don't bother reading back even a page or so to understand what's going on are boring.

I think some people are confused by the fact that the tower went through a several year proposal/approval stage before they finally broke ground in 2013. To people not paying close attention, it might seem like it's been under construction since 2006 or something

I congratulate San Francisco for building this handsome soaring tower and forever changing the skyline. A enviable trophy for a wonderful city!

It looks like they are building the ground floor in 2 layers. Can somebody explain this?

I'm not sure what you mean but it looks to me like it's going to have a double-height lobby on the ground floor with a mezzanine.

They had poured concrete on the floor plate last week. Now they are installing another layer of rebar and getting ready to pour another layer of concrete

Why they would do it as you describe I can't say, but here's today's action on that:
