New pipes won't solve old problems

KANNUR: The city is reeling under acute water shortage. In the last three days, water supply was disrupted in many parts of the city. But now with the new project being planned to renovate the existing water supply network in the city, it seems the authorities are slowly waking up to address the issue.

Minister for water resources P J Joseph will inaugurate the Rs 67 crore project on October 1. A new 35-km-long pipeline would be installed parallel to the existing one from Pazhassi dam at Veliyambra to the Thana tank in the city. This is expected to solve the issue of frequent water supply disruptions in the city and the surrounding areas.

Pipelines in the area are built using 700 mm asbestos cement pipes and hence pipe burst is a persistent issue. Under the new project, these pipelines will be replaced with ductile iron pipes. But residents in the city are a skeptical lot. "In our colony there was no water for the last three days. Authorities said things will be solved soon. They promise and every other day we face the same problem," rued Mohandas, a resident of Puzhathi Housing Colony. He said along with renovating the water supply lines, more public wells should be provided.

The crux of the issue is that the existing water supply network in the city is 35 years old. It has the capacity to supply water only to 5,000 households. But currently this network is being used to meet the water needs of over 20000 households apart from 1500-odd public taps.

The infrastructure to supply water is so inadequate that while the current requirement is 36 million litres a day, the supply is less than 12 million litres. In the summer season, the problem is grave and hotels, lodges, and other business establishments face the brunt of it. Water is supplied to Cantonment area, Elayavoor, Puzhathi, Pallikkunnu Valappatanam, Chirakkal, and Azhikode apart from the municipal area. But KWA officials say that the new water pipelines can address the water needs more efficiently. "Once the project is completed, it would help over 2.73 lakh people in the region," said T M C Abdul Khader, superintending engineer, KWA.

The project is expected to take 18 months to complete because in many places the main pipelines run across the road. It is also sometimes obstructed by underground telephone lines. But people in the region doubt if this project would be able to address the water shortage issue. Since the new project aims to replace only the main pipelines, they feel that pipe bursts would continue in the sub-lines.

The KWA superintending engineer agreed that the distribution network also should be augmented to solve the water crisis completely. But as of now no concrete plan is in place to address the issue.

Kannur water supply scheme work begins
Commencement of works for replacing the water distribution pipeline for Kannur municipality and the seven adjoining panchayats was inaugurated by Water Resources Minister P.J. Joseph at a function at the Stadium Corner here on Saturday.

The much-awaited project for replacing the existing asbestos cement pipeline from the reservoir at the Pazhassi project site to the town with new ductile iron pipe was expected to be completed in 18 months.

Inaugurating the works, the Minister said the Rs.67-crore project would be a permanent solution to the problems faced by people of the municipality and adjoining panchayats in water supply.

Referring to irrigation projects in the State, the Minister said steps were under way to complete all the existing major and minor irrigation projects in a time bound manner.

He said measures had been taken to replace corroded shutters of the Pazhassi irrigation project reservoir here, which was a major source of drinking water supply in the district. With constant power disruption and voltage fluctuation affecting pumping of water from the treatment plant near the reservoir, a 33 Kv substation estimated at Rs.8.5 crore would be constructed near the site, he said.

The Rs.67-crore project with the capacity to distribute 36 mld (million litres/day) water would benefit 2,73,000 people in Kannur municipality and seven adjoining panchayats.

Ongoing drinking water projects such as the Japanese-aided Pattuvam project, estimated at Rs.317 crore, Anjarakkandy water supply scheme, and the Thalassery water supply scheme would be completed in time, he said.

Pattuvam project

The Pattuvam project was being developed in four packages, he said, adding that over 90 per cent works were completed in the first and second packages. There was some delay in distribution because some works had to be re-tendered, he noted.

Informing that the project envisaged laying of pipeline for 623 km, he said the pipeline had already been laid for 355 km. The project was expected to be partially commissioned in March next year, he added.

The Rs.159-crore Anjarakkandy project with a capacity to supply 50 mld would be commissioned in December, Mr. Joseph said. The project would benefit people in 10 panchayats.

He also said that works for the Thalassery water supply scheme under the Special Assistance Against Recession in Kerala (SAARK) would be awarded soon. The project would also be completed in 18 months, he added.

Solutions for solving traffic problems in Kannur city evolved in the meeting between district authorities, MLAs, MP, district panchayat president, municipal chairperson etc.

Suggestions include
* 7 bus bays between Thazhe Chovva and Puthiyatheru. All other stops will be removed.
* Four pocket roads in the city will be developed as bypasses.
* Coastal road to be developed via Valapattanam toll-Chalad-Guest House-District Hospital-City-Thayyil-Kuruva-Kadalayi-Kizhunna-Muzhappilangad
Estimates and proposals will be formed in the next meeting on Oct 10th.

Report says survey of Thalassery Mysore railway line is completed(when?). Karnataka and Kerala govts to share the cost of the project. This have been discussed with both chief ministers. Survey report will be handed over to railway board and will be presented in next board meeting.

Total length of the line will be 246 kms(When actual road distance from Thalassery to Mysore is just 140 km ) Estimated cost is 2100 crores. Route is Thalassery-Wayanad-Nanjangud-Mysore. 159 kms will be in Karnataka and remaining 87 kms in Kannur, Wayanad district(So instead Kannur-Coorg-Mysore this is valanju mookku pidikkal through Wayanad).

If railway board agrees it will be included in the coming budget and construction can start soon(Entharo entho? )

Mysore-Tellichery line: CMs come closer

MYSORE: The Chief Ministers of Kerala and Karnataka have expressed interest in entering into a cost-sharing agreement to lay a railway line between Mysore and Tellicherry, said Union Minister of State for Railways K H Muniyappa.

He said that the survey of the project, estimated to cost around Rs. 2,100 crore, would be soon placed before the Railway Board. The proposed railway line would pass through Nanjangud and Wayanad situated 236 km and 241 km respectively from Mysore( ). Also, 159 km of the track will run in Karnataka.

The Railway Ministry will hold a meeting with both state governments to decide on the cost sharing. Currently the Karnataka government has taken up 11 on-going projects on cost-sharing basis, he added.

Why the hell it has to go to Nanjangud? We dnt want a sight seeing trip here. The intention is more on freights than passenger benefits. If they want to touch nanjagud they can work on nanjangud nilambur line.

Once it reaches Mananthavady then Nanjangud is closer. But still I don't understand this 159 kms in Karnataka. Road distance from Mysore to Waynad border is less than 100 kms. It is understandable that railway line is longer than road in ghat section. But here ghat section comes between Kannur and Wayanad. Then why there is a additional 60 kms from Wayanad to Nanjangud. There is something wrong in this news.

According to another report this an announcement made by MoSR Muniyappa on a function in Karnataka. May be he mixed up both Nilambur-Nanjangud and Thalassery-Mysore proposals.

Conspiracy in Tly-Mysore railway line survey. MLAs said they won't accept this so called survey completed in just two weeks. When the demand was for railway line via Kuthuparamba, Mattannur, Iritty the survey suggest it through Wayanad and Nanjangud. This is through ecologically sensitive areas thus the project will never happen.

I doubt this new survey was intentionally made to get rejected. If you take history our dear bus operators had played long time for this. Be it dissolving railway projects or railway ticket bulk booking.

Also in karnataka side doubling and electrification of bangalore-mysore line is dead slow. Even if the project get approved it will take atleast 10 years to show up.
