I wonder whether Majorca at ca 3,600 km^2 is the smallest island with a still functioning intercity rail network. Anyone can think of an even smaller place?

Not sure depending on what you can consider long distance railway.

Long Island (3.567 km▓) is slightly smaller than Majorca (3.640,11 km▓), but its railway network is conditioned by the presence of New York City in the western tip of the island and it is connected to the continental US network.

Mauritius (2,040 km▓) used to have industrial railways, today abadoned.

The Isle of Man (572 km▓) has a separated narrow gauge railway network too.

The Isle of Wight (384 km▓) on the southern coast of UK has as well an independent railway network. Most of the network was closed, but a 13,6 km long line is still operating and a touristic steam train too.

Borkum (30,74 km▓) (the Westernmost East Frisian Islands in front of the German North Sea coast) as well has a railway line between the harbour and the town. The island of Langeoog (as well another East Frisian island) has another rail link between the harbour and the town. Spiekeroog island (18,25 km▓) and Wangerooge island (4.97 km2) (other German East Frisian islands) has as well small railway networks.

Anybody knows anything smaller?

Was thinking in Wight indeed...
http://www.iwsteamrailway.co.uk/timetables.aspx

and keeps as a touristic atraction.

Furthermore, Gran Canaria has a project on going and it is smaller.

I had no idea about those services in smaller islands thanm Majorca.

Which are really surprising are the lines in the Eastern Frisian Islands... almost all of them have an inner railway network linking harbours and towns... and we are talking about extremely small islands.

I had heard about the Isle of Man railway before, but not about any of the others. Well found!
