What follows now are some shots from the train window focusing on any signs of the new line.

Here the new line diverges from the old one ca 5 min south of Santiago.

And now the famous viaduct (sorry for quality)

Had I not known already, I wouldn't have guessed that the structure seen has anything to do with Santiago-Vigo railway. It crosses the old line at almost 90 degree angle.

This is the train I arrived with (all stopping MD) in Pontevedra station about to leave for Vigo. It's a short train, only 3 coaches but I guess there is no demand for more. The train is really comfortable (how old are these?) with plenty of leg space for a tall guy like me. The train was about 80% full going south in the morning and ca 60% going back in the evening.

Pontevedra station has been rebuilt so recently that the paint has literally not dried yet. There are still some areas not complete. Again there are 5 platforms in anticipation of many more trains (hope that happens).

What you see here is a construction train on the right and a trenhotel on the left. For some reason the latter was standing there the entire day.

This is the underground passage connecting platforms at Pontevedra.

Pontevedra station is much bigger than Santiago station and it is also attached to an entertainment centre. However it is not particularly close to the city centre. There might be a bus (I didn't look).

This is at Pontevedra again, but now in the evening. In addition to the ever present trenhotel now there is also Alvia standing on one of the currently unused platforms.

The following few shots are from a train window going back. There as before it was looking west, now it's east (both times right side facing the direction of travel)

The new line and the old one in parallel not too far from Pontevedra.

The new line diverges…

The viaduct again…

Overall not bad at all and likely to improve! I have to say though that on the old line the train really crawls. At few stretches near Vilagarcia de Arousa I think I could have done better with my bicycle… The current travel time to Pontevedra is about 1 h. Anyone knows what it is likely to be after all works are finished?

And as a parting shot here are Renfe ticket machines for medium distance and long distance travel. I'd guess there are about 20 years between the design dates of both machines.

News!!

The new Albaida station, on the Xativa-Alcoi line (in the Valencia province, Eastern Spain) opened on July 4th.

The new station is a bit more central than the old one.

It´s costed €1.37M, and will be an interchange point with buses.

A class 592 DMU calling at the new station, bound for Xativa and Valencia:

20-25 min probably, in theory and during computer simulation, the travel time between A Coruña and Vigo is 48-49 min for non stop service. with a 10 min cushion you would have a travel time of about 1 hour. Renfe has no such plans and the fastest planned service will be 1 hour and 10 min including stops in Santiago and Pontevedra.

Railways in Majorca.

News!! (forgotten post from 16 June 2014)

The new Can Foradí station, on the Palma to Inca line, opened.

The station includes a new overpass to replace an old foot level crossing.

The station has short platforms, so some doors might not open while the train calls there.

Santiago-Vigo line.

The upgrade between Pontevedra and Vilagarcía de Arousa has been finished, excepting the electrification.

There is now double track between those two stations.

Good news!!

I went recently to Salamanca, and while i was planning the trip i tried to find out if i could go by train.....

It didn`t work so well, let us hope that with the electrification in the near future that might be a possibility!!

P.S.: on the portuguese side, the intercity trains go from Pampilhosa (North Line) to Guarda and the regional trains go from Guarda to Vilar Formoso!!
