1) usually both, but there are sleepers that can hold both gauges on the same time

2) spanish loading gauge is a little bit bigger than the European standard

Not a problem, the sleepers are laid down with the dual gauge on the outer rail so conversion will pose no problem. This is regardless if the platform is on the left or right hand.

You mean they move the outer rail inward when changing the gauge? In this case you must make certain that the separation between the two tracks of a double track line is suficient, as trains will then end up passing closer, and the gap between platforms and train will increase. Both issues must be dealt with.

If they move both rails than there is no problem, as the loading gauge is not changed. However, if you move only one rail you also move the centreline of the loading gauge.

Yes, but it was mentioned that the intention is to reuse existing stock (by swapping out axles).

Madrid is sitting over an Emmental cheese

One of the projects that will contribute the most to uniting the regions is the new high-speed tunnel that will connect the stations of Puerta de Atocha and Chamartín. The new double track link will be 7 kilometres and 313 metres long. With the new tunnel, these two stations will cease to be just terminals for HSR, and all the various lines will be connected up. Currently there is only a HS bypass in the outskirts of Madrid.

This is the third rail tunnel that will connect these two stations, the exisisting are both dedicated exclusively for metropolitan rail running in iberian gauge.

this is the video produced for ADIF in english:

And this is the map made by "El Pais":

Interesting project. I'm sure it's a great step forward for the AGV-network and the Spanish transports in general.
When is it planned to be buildt?

Damn, that's brilliant! I'd wish that more cities would do a project like that!

TBM in progress since around April this year, and in theory will take 2 years to be fully completed, lets say end of 2012...

It think this is not that simple though, there are other big projects ongoing at the same time in the city that somehow impact on this one timingwise.

Atocha Station is currently under deep upgrading, that will reconfigure and increase the tracks dedicated to Cercanias and HS among other things. Also Chamartin is suposed to get a full renovation so all this could somehow delay the tunnel or viceversa....
