I don´t think they must be very far... Galicia produces some good cheeses, and milk and butter too, of course.

Barcelona-Estació de França
Open since 1929, in place of two former stations, the Mataró station (built in 1848 in an area now occupied by a road and buildings), and the Granollers station (built in 1854).

A question:

Why is it that Talgo is almost the only rolling stock manufacturer that deals with Thompson bogies? What are the benefits of using them so often, and what are the reasons that other manufacturers appear to have little interest in using them as well?

From wikipedia
Quote:
Talgo trains are best known for their unconventional articulated railway passenger car that uses a type similar to the Jacobs bogie that Talgo patented in 1941. The wheels are mounted in pairs but not joined by an axle and the bogies are shared between coaches rather than underneath individual coaches. This allows a railway car to take a turn at higher speed with less swaying

Photos of Cortes de Navarra station, on the Zaragoza-Tudela-Castejón de Ebro-Pamplona/Logroño line.
Recently upgraded with new higher, longer platforms (but still foot level crossing between platforms...).

One photo of Zaragoza-Delicias station, with an unexpected class 449 EMU (not usual to see them in Zaragoza).

Photos of Almazán-Villa station, on the Torralba-Soria line.
The restart of the upgrade works on this line, which had been halted due to austerity, is imminent.

Most train used to be constructed with a flat floor running over the bogies, instead of between the wheels. Nowadays low floor trains are more common. The floor height of a Talgo can be made extremly low, which is advantageous for you center of gravity. A big advantage is that you can use wider (up to about 25cm) coaches within the same clearance because they are shorter (about 12m instead of the usual 20m to 26m).

A Talgo wheelset compared to a 'regular' solid axle:
  • Requires 4 bearings per axle, instead of 2
  • Is more diffucult to fit brakes to (you can only fit a disc to the wheel itself, whereas you can fit up to 4 discs to a solid axle)
  • Needs a more elaborate braking system because the left and right wheels must be controled independent, on a solid axle you only need to control the entire axle
  • Is very elaborate to fit motors to (as far as I know Talgo does not build driven Talgo wheelsets), so you usually end up with motorcars or locomotives to actually power the train
All these points together offer pros and cons for both systems. In case of broad gauge and low platform Spain the Talgo system make sense. For normal gauge and high platform northern Europe is just brings a lot of unneeded complexity. And of course the final argument: Talgo has the patent for this type of axle, which makes it less viable for others to use this construction.

Another accident.

15 injured in a crash at the Murcia-Lorca-Aguilas line, between Almendricos and Pulpí stations (right at the border between Andalusia and Murcia regions, Southeastern Spain), when a class 592 DMU hit a lorry carrying tangerines at a barrier-less level crossing.

On board were 70 passengers plus the staff. None are seriously injured, though some have been sent to the Huércal-Overa hospital.

Judging by the state in which it is after the crash, I´m afraid the DMU has just waved goodbye. Let´s hope here for a quick recovery of all the injured.

Valladolid.

Photos of the outer freight ring railway works, which featured a new Valladolid depot, and that have been halted.
This was linked to the arrival at Valladolid of the HSL from the north.
No restart date yet, and some parts are starting to look like a pool.
