The changing face of Cardiff: Demolition!

Anyone who regularly frequents the Cardiff Developments thread will know that Cardiff is set to change a fair bit over the next few years. Of course, before new buildings can go up, the old ones have gotta come down. This thread is intended to show some of the destruction photographically!

First up, the demise of the Wales national ice rink, enjoy ...

The first bit coming down:

The destruction of old buildings opens up new views (allbeit temporarily until the the replacement is built):

More to come...

I took these shots in the summer before I went back up to Newcastle, this was the next building to go but unfortunately I wasn't around to watch:

And what it's like now, shrouded in fog:

Is it meant to be preserved? Hopefully it should be even if they wanted to demolish it.

Such combinations of tearing down the old and keeping the facade intact is getting more common here.

Yes, it forms the entrance to the new tower.

Although I like the idea of keeping the old building, this is a rather extreme example and I don't think it's wholly successful. The two buildings are just too completely different for it to work. But it's definitely intersting, and helps this particular street (which bit by bit is being reworked with newer and newer buildings) retain a little piece of Victorian charm.

That is rather extreme, but it is still 'something' to remember the old building by....but wouldnt the conservation authorities have screamed that the old building was demolished in the first place...I had the impression that old buildings receive very strong protection in the UK or Europe.

@ Raffi:

No loss IMHO. Neither the ice rink nor the Toys R Us building had any claim towards preservation, at least not from the way I see it.

On the contrary, and very much against my usual view of things, I'm downright grateful that the ice rink went in order to better show off this place:

On the other hand, I'm not sure what that Victorian facade is doing there ... reminds me of a certain project on 23 Amber Road in Singapore (which I hope will never happen in its current shape).
