Malaysian Double Decker Bus
Double-decker buses for tourists in KL
Wednesday November 30, 2005 By CHOW HOW BAN ![]() Kamaruddin (left) and Ruslin (right) leaving after a press conference held at the end of the Kuala Lumpur Tourism Action Council meeting on Monday. DOUBLE-DECKER buses carrying sight-seeing tourists are expected to make their debut in Kuala Lumpur by the middle of next year. Mayor Datuk Ruslin Hasan said a company that was planning to introduce the service was now in the final stages of finalising its routes and fares. ”They (the company) are planning to start off with 10 buses equipped with tour guides and recorded information about the city in eight languages. The bus service will be similar to those provided in other major cities like London. “It will be connected from hotels to routes approved by the Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board (CVLB), police and the Tourism Ministry. The buses will go to about 30 tourist spots in the city,” he said after chairing a Kuala Lumpur Tourism Action Council’s meeting on Monday. He said the buses would possibly operate in 30-minute intervals and foreign and local tourists could simply hop on and off the buses using a common ticket that would be valid for a whole day. “The company has proposed to operate the bus services from 8am to 7pm but there have been requests from the industry to cater for tourists who could only go sightseeing at night after their business meetings have ended. “The company said they would study the need and feasibility of providing its services at night,” he said, adding that each bus would cost about RM700,000. Tourism Malaysia director-general Datuk Kamaruddin Siaraf said the “hop on/hop off” bus service would allow tourists to alight at a certain tourist attraction where they could spend enough time before hopping onto another bus to get to the next destination. He said the company would be required to apply for a licence with the Tourism Ministry to be a tour operator apart from getting the relevant licences from CVLB. “This (double-deck and sky-roofed bus) is what they are having in cities like London and Frankfurt. We are encouraging more companies to provide such services. This is a free-for-all thing and is not a monopoly. “The Government has taken steps to recognise the importance of such bus services to tourists to complement the existing public transport available in the city. This is a good thing,” added Kamarud-din. The meeting was attended by 30 advisory members from various government agencies, corporate sector, non-governmental organisations, hoteliers and Malaysia Airlines. Among the matters discussed were the increase in hotel rates, efforts to attract high quality tourists and Visit Malaysia Year 2007. It was the second meeting of the year.

KL Hop On-Hop Off Buses
Taking in KL the easy way Monday, November 27, 2006 TheStar ![]() BY the middle of next month, tourists will be able to go sightseeing in Kuala Lumpur by taking the KL Hop On-Hop Off buses, the latest product introduced to boost tourism in the city. KL mayor Datuk Ruslin Hasan introduced the double-decker bus to the media on Thursday prior to a KL Tourism Action Council's advisory board meeting at Renaissance Hotel Kuala Lumpur. The bus was developed by Elang Wah Sdn Bhd and will be operated by the company. Elang Wah Sdn Bhd managing director Syed Azhar Syed Nadzir said four buses would be rolled out for a three-week test run and tourists would be able to use them in the middle or at the end of next month. (From left) Ruslin, Syed Azhar and City Hall advisory board members Ooi Saw Choo and Datuk Dr M. Thambirajah taking a closer look at the double-decker KL Hop On-Hop Off bus during the unveiling ceremony at Renaissance Hotel recently.“It is the first ever hop-on and hop-off bus service in Malaysia. This is certainly not new in Europe and America. We use the concept to suit the Malaysian environment and believe that this service is good for KL and the Visit Malaysia Year 2007,” he said. “Hopefully, by April, we will have 10 buses. With the four buses, we estimate (a ridership of) 500 passengers a day and 1,500 passengers a day with 10 buses.” The bus will connect to about 43 tourist attractions in the city. The KL Hop On-Hop Off City Tour will run from 8.30am to 8.30pm daily at 30-minute intervals. Passengers can hop on and off as many times as they like at any of the 22 designated stops along the route. A pre-recorded tour commentary in Malay, English, Mandarin, Hindi, Arabic, Japanese, French and Spanish is available by using headsets on board. The guided tour is designed for tourists to experience the places of interest through stories of the present and past. The bus will also stop at major hotel areas. Tickets can be bought at a ticket counter to be built in Bukit Bintang, on the bus and over the Internet while hotel and travel agents will act as agents to sell the ticket to their customers. The tickets, which will allow passengers to use the service the whole day, are priced at RM38 (adult), RM160 (family or group of five) and RM17 (senior citizens, students and the disabled). It will be free for children aged below five.

KL Hop-On Hop-Off yang dikendalikan Syarikat Elang Wah Sdn. Menurut Pengarah Urusan Elang Wah Sdn. Bhd., Syed Azhar Syed Nadzri. – Bernama

Bus operator struggles to remedy shortcomings
Friday January 5, 2007 By BAVANIM M. TheStar THE management of the KL Hop-On Hop-Off double decker buses are working on fine-tuning the hiccups that the company is currently facing with its new buses. Elang Wah Sdn Bhd head of corporate affairs from Ekhwan Abdul Rashid said they were now fine-tuning the audio system on the buses. “The audio system is specially designed and made to cater for our buses’ commentary service in eight languages. As this is the first time such a system is being used in a double-decker bus, there are bound to be glitches. “But we are working on improving the system and will advise tourists accordingly before they get onto the bus,” he said, adding that professional tour guides and English commentary via speakers would be provided as a substitute. “We are hoping that the problem will be rectified as soon as possible but we will not give a time-line as we want everything to be in tip top condition,” Ekhwan said. On the long wait for the buses, Ekhwan said: “Traffic congestion is the cause of the delay. We will improve the interval as we adapt a more efficient rotation of the buses and in due time increase the number of buses.” He added that while there were minor problems to the service but it was still very popular among the tourists. “Since it was launched on Dec 28, about 200 people are using our buses on a daily basis and we're confident of achieving the 500 soon,'' he said. “As it is still in its infancy stage we won't deny that the service shall encounter many obstacles in its journey to becoming one of Malaysia’s tourism symbols. The buses, which costs a whopping RM750,000 each, are disabled friendly, fully air-conditioned, equipped with glass roof panels, on the upper deck and CCTV cameras. At the moment there are four buses on the road and another six will be added on by June. The service offers a tour with pre-recorded commentary in eight different languages that will guide tourists through 42 major sights and attractions in Kuala Lumpur. Passengers can stay on the tour for the full circuit, or hop-on or hop-off at any one of the stops. The tour runs a continuous circle daily from 8.30am until 8.30pm at around 30 minute intervals. Tickets are priced at RM38 for foreigners and RM17 for children and senior citizens while children below five years old get a free ride. Tickets can be bought on the bus and from travel agents, hotels, official agents, or through the Internet at www.myhoponhopoff.com.

i read an aticle saying malacca will soon to have double decker bus too..
But it will be an open air bus... |
