Congress Hotel was merely a Lakefront Protection Ordinance issue, so there was no PD or rezoning for the alderman to be involved with.

Usually, the mayor and the alderman are in agreement over a given proposal. It was probably the mayoral support that landed the Congress Hotel expansion on the agenda to begin with, despite the best wishes of the alderman.

I think a Lakefront applicant can move his application along and eventually get to Plan Commission without any discussion with the mayor or alderman, and that's what happened here. It's not unlike the process of doing an as-of-right addition in a landmark district; aldermanic sponsorship simply isn't part of the process. We're just used to Lakefront applications being for big-deal projects, bundled with PD applications or rezonings.

I was around a bunch of political folks Thursday night much more in the know than I in Chicago politics and every one of them agreed this was unprecedented.

There was a project up on the northside last year that didn't pass the commission because the alderman was against it. I believe the project involved demolishing a 2-flat in order to build a 4-flat or something. I know that it's rare, I didn't say it wasn't.

I believe that the project was in H. Schiller's ward, but I'm not certain.

Well, yes you did saying they are usually denied if an alderman is against it. You are referring to an item where aldermanic approval is in play. Mr. Downtown has this right, it isn't. The lawyer for the Congress made that her main argument, that there was no aldermanic prerogative within this commission approval process, and she was correct. That is why INTHELOOPSAM is also incorrect saying I'm all wet because without aldermanic approval this proposal would never have typically made it before the commission. But I will jump off this topic now, because it is clear I am getting nowhere because apparently what happened doesn't fit the mindset here.

Franklin Point

Crains is reporting the Rokas development plan for Franklin Point is dead. Financing was the issue. Parcels are now back on the market.

Any news on Rokas' other developments? Does lack of financing for Franklin Point reflect similar scenarios for other projects?

Wow - only 3 of the tall buildings in the picture were even there 15 years ago.

Trib article on the South Loop School and the latest episode of DPII crazy isolationism. Apparently the latest tack, after the fence freakout and the lawsuit and the CPS/NFL conspiracy to turn Dearborn Park into a parking lot, is there's a referendum on Tuesday's ballot to change SLS from a gifted and talented magnet school into a neighborhood school open only to people living between Van Buren, 18th, the river, and the lake. Traffic, you see. Think of the children!

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/l...,7596526.story

Unclear exactly where this referendum will be on the ballot, but it is non-binding, just like Doody's parking thing.

^ LOL But will we non-residents require a passport, smart ID, or SS card & birth certificate to travel there?

Being a neophyte to the political process, how does one get such a referendum on the ballot? I would think that it would take a certain number of signatures.

Anyone know what's going on at Clark and Cermak? They started digging up a portion of the vacant lot last week.

Dearborn Park

Ok - as I read the article in the Trip about the school issue referendum I actually became a little nauseated........I mean regardless of all of our individual stands on development and planning issues and relative hatred or embrace of NIMBYs/NIMBY causes, this xenophobic hysteria from the people in their little fortress is pretty disgusting.....it's so unbelievable I constantly have to remind myself that these are actually residents of downtown Chicago!

Sounds like the location of the proposed 15-story hotel in Chinatown...

Sorry, I was clear as mud on that one. The lot I'm referring to is at the northeast corner at Clark and Cermak. It's the square parcel that's just south of the Hillard Homes' parking lot. The hotel lot is on the western side of Clark and Archer. That project has yet to begin.
