Looking for ideas for a Skyscraper Festival

In September 2007 we'll organize a week long skyscraper festival ('wolkenkrabber week' in Dutch), the first ever for our city. Amongst the 'pretty much standard' ideas are: doors open, stair running contest, illumination show, dinner in high places, photo contest, scale model exhibit, lectures and the likes we're looking for new ideas of activities and festivities to be held during such an event. Feel free to surprise me if you think you have any.

This idea is really great!

At first: try to get as much attention as possible by using the media.

Here some of my ideas. I don't know if they are all are conductable.

1: Basejumping from Delftse Poort (only for pro's of course, it must be some kinda show).

2: A skyscraper designcontest for children and adults, with nice prices of course

3: Invite Alain Robert to climb one of the scrapers.

4: Choose 7 of Rotterdam's most famous skyscrapers. Expose each one of them extensively one day in the newspaper. For example, first day you choose DP, second day Milleniumtower, and you end with the " witte huis".

There should be more nice ideas, but atm they're still not getting into my head. I think I'm going to open a topic in the Dutch skybar, called hoogbouwcafe.

We thought of that but you can't really book the guy to do a planned stunt if it was only that climbing buildings is being considered disturbance of public peace in this country (misdemeanour), although his website reads he does do conventions and seminars. One local bloke does it every once in a while too.

Rapelling off buildings can be quite fun... but getting permission to do that from public buildings may be hard to get..

How about somekind of "Build a famous building with Lego's in limited time" contest...?

I think it would be quite nice if cool pictures can be shown on the facades of the towers. Like how Edgar Davids was on Delfse Poort at Euro 2000.

1. get architects to talk about their towers and future ones
2. skyscraper-featured movies
3. go to universities and get students works on show who designed high buildings

What if you combine these two, because they're both pretty cool ideas! The only thing you need is a "superbeamer"! And then you can broadcast short films on for example the Delftse Poort. That would be magnificient!

The idea is cool. But I think it should be better to get the students to Rotterdam instead of going to the university outside Rotterdam. And of course, it needs to be broadcasted on the television!

During the last 'Wolkenkratzerfestival' in Frankfurt you could run down on the outside of one skyscraper (of course also secured by ropes). I don't know what it's called, but that would be certainly something for this festival.

great idea!

Some more ideas:
A fireworks display from some buildings or the Erasmusbrug
Lasershow on the buildings + DJ for the musical support.

SSC is populated enough to hold such an event? Is attendance good?

(referring to the ideas expressed in the first post in this thread, by Jan)

In summer holidays there is a kids festival in Rotterdam (Kid's World in Ahoy or something with that name). Children can play with Lego too. So, let's run a contest of building the most beautiful Lego skyscraper. So, it's not about the height, but the design (e.g. a small Lego Chrysler Building lookalike is better than one massive rectangular block of 2 meter high). One evening can be reserved for an adults contest.

Install many webcams (with realtime feed) in the city, all with a view from or towards skyscrapers.

^ nice one. one of the ideas is to project web cam images on a big blank wall of the famous urban places, like Times Square, Picadilly and the likes.

@ Thryve: this isn't exactly a ssc project, it's a local thing. Rotterdam had declared architecture as a public theme for 2007. A Week of Skyscrapers shouldn't be left out then.
