the frankfurt skyscraper festival is visited by hundreds of thousands of ppl during a weekend - it's always a big party - with lots of activities besides the skyscrapers open to the public. this should work anywhere....

A bit on the academic side - but some conference on issue - going high is sustainable - about the economical and environmental benefits/problems created by highrise districts. It seems that this idea is popular.

OK here's an idea (I don't think its been mentioned yet): Urban Photo Exhibition (possibly featuring winners from our own UPC?). Large, high quality prints would be on display at a gallery, or several galleries, or a conference center, or wherever.

Kinda ties into something I was thinking, which would be to have some manner by which people can learn about highrise engineering, sustainability, green architecture and so on... especially things for the kids...

I would also consider contacting local architectural schools and such, and see if someone would like to sponsor a building contest of some kind for students/youngsters... (In a structures class in uni, we once had as a project a contest to see which student could design the strongest tower out of balsa wood. The actual contest was held out in the common, where anyone could watch... This is a great crowd activity, as people love seeing the things smashed on contest day)

The Doors Open Festival is insanely popular in Toronto. In Rotterdam, with many older buildings I can see it being quite the popular attraction. How about a night time laser show, with the lasers coming from the top of the buildings? You could add in some fireworks as well. Now that would be amazing.
