Iran international flights switch to new airport

TEHRAN, Oct 28, 2007 (AFP) - All foreign airlines working in Iran will from next week operate from a new but hitherto under-used airport outside the capital Tehran, officials said on Sunday.

Gholam Hossein Baqerian, the managing director of Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKIA), some 30 kilometres (18 miles) south of Tehran, said foreign airlines would use the new airport from November 4.

Most foreign airlines have until now continued to use the city-centre Mehrabad airport even though IKIA -- named after the Islamic republic's revolutionary leader -- was ready for flights back in 2004.

Baqerian was quoted by the English language Iran Daily as saying that all Iranian airlines operating flights abroad were using IKIA from Sunday (October 28).

The ageing Mehrabad, which has only limited capacity, will now be used almost exclusively for domestic flights.

Officials from Air France, Austrian Airlines, British Midland and Lufthansa all confirmed that their flights would be leaving from IKIA as of November 4.

"From November 4, all our flights will be leaving from IKIA," said a Lufthansa representative.

Iran had hoped international flights would move even sooner. But IKIA has had a turbulent history since its opening in 2004 as Iran's showpiece airport and a hub intended to rival Dubai.

When the airport first opened in May that year, the elite Revolutionary Guards moved in to shut it down over their objections to the involvement of a Turkish-led consortium in the project.

The Guards said the consortium had business dealings with Iran's arch enemy Israel, making it a danger to national security.

Even when the first flight finally touched down in May 2005, Britain and Canada told their citizens to use flights from Mehrabad amid concerns about runway safety at IKIA -- worries which now appear to have been cleared up.

Dubai-based Emirates has until now been one of the few foreign carriers to use the new airport which has often been spookily empty with spaces intended for dozens of duty-free shops and cafes still unused.

According to Baqerian, flights from Tehran to Damascus will move to IKIA from November 21 while flights to Saudi Arabia for the Hajj pilgrimage will continue to operate from Mehrabad.

This is an excellent airport and should have more airlines moved from Mehrbad, which has aged facilities and is not big enough to meet the current growth in Iranian air travel. I hope to use IKIA in the future for a holiday to Iran, it can also be used as a good Central Asia to Middle East air hub.

IRAN Airports & other Middle East Hub Way Below ASIAN Standards

Hello Brother in IRAN,
Just for comments, your new Airport is way below
ASIAN standards when it comes to Main Gateway
IRAN's New Hub have only 7 tubes and 15 remote parking.
You could have make it more bigger...This is only a comment
No intention of insult or whatever...

Very nice. I'd love to see American Airlines start service there but I highly doubt it.

Hi,

That's OK but the fact is that this is just the phase one of the airport and there are many more gates being added in the next phases in near future. They just built this to get the crowded meharabd Airport to breath a bit but they are adding more phases in the near future but I don't have the rendering of it yet

Absolutely beautiful. It's good to see airlines like Lufthansa, Aeroflot and KLM fly there. I'm still waiting for American Airlines and Continental to start service there.

Thank you, as for the extension I don't know how it will be since master plans have not been released yet and when it's all out then we'll have a better picture and figure of the numbers. I'll be sure to update data here as soon as I have it

The US government will not allow American based airlines to fly to Iran.
