As for Freedom tower it reached a goal becoming the highest in NY while I was there. (I think that was the goal?)

Agree. I think Freedom Tower is seriously ordinary but The Shard?! Just WOW!!! The pics above are just a small sample of those I took that day. Weird light that day and the light reflected off all that loverly glass and all those facets almost blindingly.

The easily-overlooked Four World Trade Center is close to topping out. Overshadowed by the much taller 1WTC, it would in fact be huge if placed in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth. It is 298m tall, with a staggering 204,000m2 of floor space.
In comparison, the black building to the left in the photograph below is One Liberty Plaza. It is 226m high. Gives a good indication of how 4WTC would tower over Sydney's tallest office towers and residential buildings! That's pathetic. For a project of this size and importance to New York, how much is $20mil in the grand scheme of it?
edit: read it was because they were worried about the upkeep of the spire material - not the cost. They should be made to design a new spire or come up with some sort of alternative. Last edited by Dimethyltryptamine; June 1st, 2012 at 04:37 AM. |

I can't agree with the criticisms, often invalid and more bitchy, towards Freedom Tower in New York and The Shard in London. They are breathtaking and have turned out even better than on drawings. I only hope I can see them in person sooner.

Interesting article about new worlds tallest building (to be break ground in 2012 and finish in 2013 - apparently):
Chinese Construction Company to Build World's New Tallest Building In a Three-Month Timeframe Rebecca Boyle at 01:08 AM 20 Jun 2012 The world's tallest building took five years to reach its 828-metre height, but a Chinese company wants to leave the Burj Khalifa in the dust. Broad Sustainable Building, which already built a hotel in two weeks, aims to erect the new Sky City skyscraper within three months. The 220-story building would be the tallest in the world by 10 metres, according to CNN, which first reported on the construction plans. It was designed by a Dubai architect, in an interesting twist. The company would use pre-fabrication methods to construct it in record time - 95 per cent of the building will be built before the ribbon is cut at the ground-breaking ceremony. Despite its gargantuan size, the building will supposedly use one-fifth the energy of a traditional edifice, because its 15-cm-thick walls and quadruple-glaze windows will provide better insulation. When it's complete, 104 elevators will connect 220 floors and 1 million square metres of usable space. This will include the world's tallest hotel, living space and potential office space. In an interview with Xinhua, machine-translated from simplified Han Chinese, BSB chief executive officer Zhang Yue said the company wants to break ground in November, and that the tower will be completed in January 2013. If this seems overly ambitious, note that BSB has apparently done it before, albeit not on this scale. In December of last year, the company erected a 30-story hotel in 360 hours; watch a time-lapse video below. Government agencies still have to approve BSB's plans, but the Wangcheng district in Changsha, Hunan province, is already on board, CNN reports. We can't wait to see the time lapse video of this one.
