And the sad story is that a lot of Italians believe this to be true.
What did you expect, Italy is so full of macaronis it's a third world feeling already...

500 metric tonnes with only 8 cars?

that's 62.5 tonnes per car, while Shinkansen is what? 40 something?

That's heavy

Yes, it's heavy and the technical data release don't' add up. We haven't heard the entire story yet.

2-
The Nozomi N700 Shinkansen is

About 365t for the 8 car consist (11.4 t per axle). An 8 car N700 is about 200m long. Also the N700A features further improvments.

But even a French 8 car TGV Duplex, latest generation, is quite light, and very light is the AGV "Italo", built for the Italian market.

The AGV Italo has 11 carriages, is about 200m long and weighs 375t, i.e: 125 tons less than the ETR1000, as so far as we know.

Quite surprisingly nobody has still talked about the new high speed station designed by Santiago Calatrava which is under construction in Reggio Emilia and which will be named Reggio Emilia AV Mediopadana.

There's been a lot of talking and discussion on the actual opportunity to build it, due to the high building costs and low passengers traffic which will involve it (there will stop about six trains a day).

Anyway, here are some rendering and some pics, straight from the Italian forum thread:

Some older picture. The bulding site actually is pretty hard to reach since is in the middle of nowhere, quite far from Reggio Emilia city centre.

The official webcam has been down for about three months. They finally turned it on again yesterday.

Ecco alcuni snapshot che ho scattato stamattina:

The opening was scheduled for mid October 2012 but as you can see completion is still pretty far to come, and even the new scheduled opening set in June, is pretty unlikely to happen.

I forgot to mention that the High Speed station is just a parte of a wider redevelopment program featuring three brdiges overpassing the A1 highway and the brand new Reggio Emilia highway toll station. All designed by Santiago Calatrava.

The two side bridges are twins:

The central bridge:

And the proposed Highway Toll Station, which is currently on hold due to the lack of money.

It's on already existing Milan-Bologna line, right? I question the need for this particular station. Doesn't look to be a particularly convenient way of getting to Reggio Emilia or any other nearby town. Is it meant exclusively as park and ride or will there be a regular public transport of some kind to the city center?

It does look cool, though.

Yes it is on the Milano - Bologna. The non-stopping trains will run on the two central tracks while the trains will stop at the side tracks.

There will be a city center link through the existing railway line Reggio Emilia - Guastalla headed at Reggio Emilia Central station and which tracks are about two hundred meters ahead of the new station passing beneath the Highspeed railway tracks.

The first Frecciarossa 1000 by Ansaldo Breda.
Now start the test and the 2014 Milan - Rome in 2 hours and 15 minutes compared to 3 today. Can 'get to a maximum speed of 400 km / h but the speed' commercial 'of 360 km / h:

I sincerely hope that the italian Zefiro380 doesn't become the "new"Dutch Fyra. Also some Fyra's today were inside the Pistoia's AB factory.Surely that doesn't promise anything good ... having regard to the speed in which were built as same as the danish IC4.

In China the same train was tested for a constant speed of 304 km/h:

Peking February 6, 2013 – The ZEFIRO 380, the new Bombardier trains ordered by Chinese railways, reached the day before yesterday the 304 kilometres per hour during testing on the line between Beijing and Dezhou. The convoy made it to reach 380 km/h, the same family of the Frecciarossa 1000 currently realization in Pistoia from ATI ( Temporary Enterprises Association) between AnsaldoBreda and Bombardier. The Zefiro 380, 80 trains were ordered by the Ministry of railways in September 2009: this is the largest AV train with 1336 seats) in bigger release. Bombardier has applied energy-saving Protocol Eco4, one of the most advanced in terms of eco-sustainability and, at the end of life of the train, the recycling of its components. Editorial staff.
