Wish they'd be in full service before June 14th. I will be taking the Italo on the 24th from Milan to Florence. They look much more sleek than the ETR 500. I know they were going to be doing a first run for the Expo opening but other than that, I wonder if they will have them in limited service between the start of Expo and the summer schedule.

The Frecciarossa 1000 service will initially provide eight trains each way on the core route between Roma and Milano, of which four will run through to Torino and four will terminate at Rho Fiera Milano to serve the Expo 2015 fair. At the southern end, seven trains will run to or from Napoli. Another six trips each way will be added in September, with the total increasing again to 22 trains in each direction from the December 2015 timetable change.
Although designed for a maximum speed of 360 km/h, the trains will initially enter service at 300 km/h. Trenitalia says this will ensure ‘outstanding performance in terms of acceleration, traction, braking and safety’, as well as a high level of onboard comfort ‘to meet the different requirements and needs of every traveller'

Will it have bogie covers fitted? I've seen photos with some of them on, some off, and none at all.

It is a nice train. I still prefer the AGVs of ItaloTreno, though, in terms of design.

How do their technical specs compare?

Hi!

It seems that ETR 1000 will pantographs for 3 to 25 kV. I also read they would take trains to France in the future (2030?), have pre-installation of 1.5 kV ?. To what extent?.
In the media also they speak of 15 kV, but I imagine that the manufacturer means that could equip new trains, not in these 50.

The size of a transformer is mainly determined by 2 parameters: frequency and power rating. A transformer for lower frequencies needs bigger iron cores and is therefor heavier and as you may expect a higher power rating also results in a heavier transformer. If they didn't specify 15kV capability chances are you can't retrofit it or have severe performance degradation, just like most TGVs on 15kV. Any train running on 3kV DC can also run on 1.5kV DC, but if it wasn't designed to do so from the outset, usually with a 50% power reduction.

Normally I prefer placement of the third headlight under the windscreen instead of over it, but in this case I don't. Why haven't they put it above the windscreen just like the Zefiro V380 has?

Good question, because this paint job looks a lot better if you ask me.

The board of open access high speed train operator NTV has approved the award of a contract for Alstom Transport to supply and maintain a further eight trainsets.

Branded EVO, the new trainsets would be part of Alstom’s Pendolino family which NTV said offers ‘a brilliant mixture of reliability and high performance’. Their maximum operating speed would be 250 km/h, compared to 300 km/h for NTV’s existing fleet of 25 Alstom AGV trainsets which have a design speed of 360 km/h.

Delivery is planned by December 2017. NTV intends to use the additional trainsets to increase the frequency of the services it operates under the Italo brand, and to expand its network to new destinations.
Those trains would be used on mixed routes high speed and traditionals lines while AGV will run only on HS lines. This new EVO pendolino will be different in external design from present trainsets

Had an opportunity to do a back-to-back test of the Italo AGV and the Frecciarossa 1000.

The AGV had noticeably better acceleration and overall ride compared to the FR1000. Pulling out of Turin, the AGV was like a scalded cat. The FR1000 bounced around a lot at low speed over the points but rode comparably to the AGV at higher speed.

Overall I would say the ambiance in the FR1000 is better and the food and drink offer is much better in the Trenitalia train compared to Italo's.

Naples–Bari and Palermo–Catania–Messina high-speed/high-capacity lines: an important driving force for Italy’s development

6 August 2015

Michele Mario Elia, CEO of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS Italiane) and Government Commissioner for execution of two strategic works included in the so-called ‘Unlock-Italy’ Law, takes stock of the situation regarding works to commence by October 2015.

Naples–Bari and Palermo–Catania–Messina high-speed/high-capacity lines

The Naples–Bari and Palermo–Catania–Messina high-speed/high-capacity (HS/HC) itineraries are among the main works included in the so-called ‘Unlock-Italy’ Law no. 164 of 11 November 2014. The Italian government aims to give the country a strong sign of recovery in both the economy and employment – commencing in the South – through these works.

These are important works to improve the railway system and develop both the territory and social cohesion that are strategic to Italy and Gruppo FS Italiane and it is no coincidence that they have been included in Corridor 5 ‘Scandinavia–Mediterranean’ of the Trans-European Railway Network (TEN-T).

Constructing the Naples–Bari HS/HC lines along the Naples–Bari–Lecce–Taranto and Palermo–Catania–Messina main line is a clear sign of renewed attention being paid to Southern Italy by national institutions entailing effective creation of infrastructures that FS Italiane has always supported. This is an important goal that can be achieved through the process of acceleration and simplification advocated by the government to construct infrastructural works considered strategic, non-deferrable and urgent throughout Italy…

The article calls these lines HS/HC lines but on the ItalFerr website they are clearly in the conventional lines section.
