Keeping wih the snow theme because of all of the snow and ice we got Tuesday and yesterday, here's another picture from Tuesday in colonial New Castle. These are colonial rowhouses on The Strand, the prominent street where wealthy merchants lived near the Delaware River to have easy access to ships. Little alleyways (like Alexander Alley, in yesterday's photo) connected The Strand to the River for easy foot traffic in between houses.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I like knowing that people take notice to this thread.

What I like about your thread is the history/background info you provide to accompany each photo.

Looking across The Green at Memorial Hall on the campus of the University of Delaware in Newark. This picture is from this morning. Memorial Hall was built in 1924 to honor the Delaware veterans of World War I. It was built on its present-day site in the middle of The Green in order to connect the men's college to the north and the women's college to the south.

I like providing content, since I for one like knowing a little bit about what I'm looking at when viewing photo threads.

Nice thread. January 2nd reminds me of our colony over there. It lasted not for long but there is still memories left.

Those colonial rowhouses (02/15/2007 photo) are FANTASTIC!!! They seem to be nicely preserved, too. Of course, the photo, itself, is EXCELLENT and I would love to see the same shot during Springtime

Matt, consider this a request.

I never saw this thread before. It's amazing how much tiny Delaware has to offer.

I would hope that reminds you of the Swedish colony; the church was part of that colony. New Sweden is present-day Wilmington. Old Swedes Church was built by the Swedes in 1698, who were living under Dutch rule by that time.

I took a picture of those very rowhomes back in May when I did an extensive phototour of New Castle, with plenty of history to go along with it. You probably saw the thread, and responded to it. Anyway, there's a picture o those rowhomes in that thread. I plan on using my may picture in this thread, but not until the Spring, so in the meantime, you can find said picture in HERE

After a day of snow last year, lots of kids (and adults) went sledding in Rockford Park in Wilmington.

A scene on Upper Pike Creek Road in the Pike Creek area west of Wilmington from last week. The road is winding and somewhat hilly, and as a back road, it is one of the last to get plowed, so it made for a nice scene as I drove along it.

Wilmington's Amtrak service only runs along the I-95 corridor, so there is no direct route from western cities. You'll have to connect in either DC or Philly, then take a train north or south. Newark also has a station, but stops are less frequent. I was looking online, and round-trip tickets would be about $50 to $60 from Pittsburgh to Wilmington, which is not bad at all. When I came back from Tampa in October, I had to take the train from BWI, and it cost me over $50 for a one-way ticket to Wilmington on the Acela.

From your photos I have an impression that Delaware receives abundant snowfall during winter, not much less than Saskatoon it seems.

Syperd Hall on the left and Brown Hall on the right, on the north end of The Green on the campus of the University of Delaware in Newark. Both of these buildings function as dorms. Brown Hall was built in 1942, and Syperd Hall was built in 1958.

I would doubt that Delaware gets as much snow as Saskatchewan. We average maybe a foot of snow a year. Some Winters we get more snow: maybe 2 feet. My Senior year in college, we got 2 feet of snow, with 18 inches of that snow coming in one storm. Some years, though, we'll get almost no snow. My Junior year in college, we got only 2 inches of snow for the whole Winter.

We have gotten around 3 inches of snow so far this Winter. 2.5 inches of that snow came in this storm this past Wednesday, and 2 inches of those 2.5 inches weren't even snow: they were ice pellets.

The reason that there are so many snow pictures is because it's Winter, and so I want to use my Winter photos now while everyone is in the mood.

Actually by this moment we only get around 8 inches of snow, I had never thought Delaware has substantial snowfall--- roughly half of ours.

And yes, snowfall in Delaware seems much less reliable than here.

(Total for this winter, however, exceeds 30 inches (2.5 feet)

At the intersection of Old Baltimore Pike and Old Cooch's Bridge Road south of Newark is a historical marker noting the site of the Battle of Cooch's Bridge. The Battle of Cooch's Bridge was the only Revolutionary War battle fought on Delaware soil. On September 3, 1777, American forces attempted to stall the British's march to Philadelphia. Guerilla tactics were initially used, but the Americans quickly resorted to a more standard ambush with selected marksmen. The Americans held off a few British and Hessian charges, but had to eventually retreat due to low ammunition and being outnumbered. The Cooch House, in the background of the picture, was subsequently used as a headquarters by British General Cornwallis as the British regrouped to continue to Philadelphia.

So on average you get only 8 inches of snow a year? That's not much at all for Canada. Are you in a dry climate or something?
